Summer Recruitment 09:24 - Aug 31 with 5699 views | TalkingBlues | I was banging on about it being poor back in July, here we are 24 hours away from deadline and we’ve missed virtually every target we’ve bid for and will now be scrambling around for what we can get on deadline day, Ahadme MKII is in full swing. How are we all feeling about signings with a day to go?

Summer Recruitment on 10:52 - Aug 31 by vilanovablue | We were told 2-3 more and since then have signed one (Williams). In fairness I'd rather sign nobody than players for the sake of. We've a squad that can compete at this level and I want players that can enhance the squad as does the manager an approach I'm happy with. |
But there is still time left, so if we sign someone before the deadline then that quote was proven right. Until then there is no need to go into meltdown, especially given how we've started the season.

And even if it IS proved right, there's still no need to go round bedwetting. Squad's still strong enough to finish top half and we'll almost certainly strengthen again in January and next summer.

We apparently missed out on Simms, who went to Covpot for silly money & has not scored yet well not on a football pitch

Think it will be. Consolidate this season. Sell couple of stars in summer to increase spend potential Use funds to bring in further quality.

Summer Recruitment on 09:27 - Aug 31 by ITFC_Forever | That's funny, I could have sworn we signed Luongo, Taylor, Hirst, Hutchinson, Williams and Slicker? So not missing out on virtually every target. Ashton has set himself up for a fall though by claiming we'd sign at least 2 or 3 more a couple of weeks ago. |
Yeah, and the more games we keep winning. The harder that fall will be... These threads are ludicrous attempts at trolling..When there are so many positives to be talking about.. In case nobody noticed, we recently beat one of Sir Bobby's club record undefeated runs. And we've made the best start by any promoted side in The EFL. Questions to the OP... Do we still get 3pts per win if no one else arrives before the window closes? Or will we be getting a points deduction? We're evolving, doesn't happen overnight. Anyone got a team sheet from last season's opening fixtures?.... No Luongo, Hirst, Clarke, Broadhead, Taylor. And from memory, people still chatting about Bonne coming through the door, last knockings.. If you can't see how far we've come since then, you're blind.

Summer Recruitment on 11:43 - Aug 31 with 884 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | What we needed was... Goalkeeper, experienced in Championship on loan until January to cover for Walton's injury and in case Hladky and Slicker were eaten alive in the Championship. I still think this is needed. Centre half with significant Championship or lower Premiership experience. Burgess is struggling a bit, Edmondson is not good enough. This is absolutely essential. Centre forward, Championship or lower Premier League experience. One that knows how to get goals in this league and doesn't miss so many easy chances.

Summer Recruitment on 10:15 - Aug 31 by _clive_baker_ | This is what winds me up. People look at the league we were in last season and conclude we're a L1 side. It's such a silly way of looking at things. We're not, and we weren't then in anything but league status, especially post January additions. We battered most of the sides we came up against, hammered Championship opposition in the cup, took the runaway Championship winners very close in a 2nd leg and have taken to this league like a duck to water. We gave a very strong account of ourselves against Leeds who have spent the past 3 years in the Premier League and have an £80m front 4. We're firmly a comfortable Championship outfit on and off the pitch as it stands right now. That's not to say I don't want a couple of quality additions, and I do think we need them if we're to challenge for the top 6. But the suggestion that the side is similar to the one that took us up therefore it's not good enough for this level is ridiculous. |
I agree with this, Clive. I think part of the problem is that the FM23 brigade expect mass signings every window. We had Cook’s laughable mud at wall approach two years ago followed by steady acquisition to get out of L1 (with a few failures along the way). We have a good team now and my personal fear was that there would again be mass signings that would destroy the cohesion of the current side. Evolution not revolution is what I hoped for. The players we have are by and large better than Lambert’s mid table L1 dross so replacing them is inevitably going to be more difficult. Taylor? Hopefully will do well for us. Hirst, Luongo, McKenna - crucial to get them signed up. Beyond that, I was and still am hopeful of another forward and an experienced centre half, but even the latter is getting less imperative as Baggott develops. For me it’s more important we bring in the right people than anything else. If we have to wait till Jan/next summer so be it. I know in this day and age patience is in short supply, especially for the wet bedsheet people, but I think it’s important. I will be very interested in what Ashton and McKenna have to say at the end of the window.

Absolutely this - we were not a L1 side in quality last year. The recruitment has been clever, Broadhead would have cost twice as much when we were in the Championship because that's the market. Championship clubs are paying multi millions for players, but to get £1.5m out of a L1 side is seen as a good deal. We got in early with the recruitment and we've got a great squad. It's not going to compete with the likes of Leeds (or whilst they have their big players) on paper but we've got one of the best coaches around and a squad togetherness which would be disrupted with a load of pointless signings. When do we start to trust the process and enjoy the results? Because I've been doing that for the past 12 months and, tell you what, it's bloody fun.

Summer Recruitment on 10:30 - Aug 31 by _clive_baker_ | Quite, and constrained by FFP. £1m gets you a top player in L1, in the top 1/3 of the Championship it barely gets you a bench warmer. I'm not sure who fans think we can pluck out of our ar5e that'll dominate the division while staying within the financial headroom. Fans are impatient, I get that. But quite honestly if we finish in the top half this season and consolidate then that's a decent outcome for me. We've probably got 10+ players in our squad where that's likely their ceiling on a good day, the likes of Aluko, Hladky, Harness, Jackson, Donacien, Evans, Ladapo. We're not going to rotate all of those in 1 window while retaining the togetherness and familiarity that's one of our biggest assets, even if we could spend to that extent. It'll take a few windows of moving 3 or 4 on and upgrading them. Our squad today is significantly stronger than it was 12 months ago, and dare say it will be again 12 months from now. |
I'll add to this that we don't really know what we have at present. This roster hasn't been tested at this level. It was the Jan. window last year where we transformed our season. We'll have a better idea of what we need and other clubs/players will know who is surplus in four months' time. The way up isn't by spending. It is by spending wisely. If the last two years hasn't inspired confidence in the competence of our management team to some segment of the fan base, then I don't think much is going satisfy that segment. He would have known how many we are targeting and was confident. We signed a Man U defender with 50+ Prem League appearances and appear to have landed a long term attacking target on loan from Spurs. A player described by KM as one of the best in world football. That is two. Hope we add a CB as well.
