Following the Axel arrival and forwards 12 let’s try best CHs

1. Allan Hunter
2. Kevin Beattie
3. Terry Butcher
4. Russell Osman
5. Bill Baxter
6. Andy Nelson
7. Tony Mowbray
8. Mark Venus
9. Jason De Vos
10. Hermann Hreidarsson
11. Derek Jefferson (Chopper)
12. Luke Chambers

Honourable mentions to Macauley, Berra, Smith, McGreal, Linighan and apologies to the pre 1960s players who I know by name only. John Wark could easily be included, but he goes in 12 best midfielders so I’ve cheated a bit. I’ve no doubt people will put Beattie above Hunter, but I just feel Big Al was a more important player for us over a longer period.

There’s a lot of good players there.

Id swap Chambers for Herman cos Herman played more as a LB I think and mainly cos it will wind some people up a lot

I didn’t include Luke Chambers because he mostly played at full back, but given his fantastic number of appearances for us he did play CH sometimes and I can’t disagree with you. But I’ve planted my CH flag in the ground so can’t change it now!

"Macauley, Berra, Smith, Linighan " I think all of these go ahead of Chambers, if selecting on quality rather than quantity of games...

My abacus broke!

Chambers’ inclusion should encourage a bit of debate.

John Peddelty was a great centre half in the early 70's, but his career was cruelly ended by a head injury after 50 odd appearances.

went to Plymouth as part of the Mariner deal

Fractured his skull and did well to have any sort of career after that. Became a policemen after retiring. He was never going to have a sustained career at Ipswich with Hunter and Beattie in the way and neither was he good enough for the level we were playing at, other than as cover.

Two players I thought would be top banana and never quite made it were Phil Whelan, who had a spectacular start to his ITFC career, and Ian Cranson. Ian went on to have a good career, but not to the level I thought he might make. Injuries blighted him.

He is often at games - something of a legend at Plymouth! He has also popped into the Senior Blues Cafe in the Hall of Fame (2nd & 4th Wednesdays of each month, 1030-12, coffee/ chat for over-50s)

But keep fawning over him.

Some good CB's have been omitted but it was 'obvious' he'd be on this list. So obvious.

I never realised he was just 22 when he had to retire. He suffered another head injury while at Plymouth and that was it. Given he is still with us and active, correct decision!

Who knows where his career might have taken him but for that injury.

Ian Cranson above Chambers.

Chambers was an outstanding servant and captain however…….

Don't you ever look at the fact that literally everyone else has a lot of time and respect for Chambo and consider that you might be the one in the wrong?

No I don't take any notice of that as there are a few bizarre things about some of our fans. Clapping and applauding him and the rest of the players for the relegation and its manner for example. Or defending Evans throughout the years where it was obvious the only way with him was down. Mind-boggling is an understatement.

Firstly, like McGreal I forgot all about him. Secondly he only made about 50 appearances. Awesome talent though Titus was, and he gave Roy Keane and that annoying Sunderland player Nicky Summerbee a good booting, he doesn’t make my top 12.

There will be plenty of players I’ve missed, I’m sure. It was a list for discussion.

I'd add Tony Vaughan to the list of players who never reached the level we thought they might.

Brian Gayle wasn't bad and had a decent spell with Sheff Itd after us.

And Damien Delaney is the one who looked like he would never even get another game let alone come good, then Palace sign him and he is immense...

I thought Delaney was all over the shop for us. Poor. Goes to Palace and boom! A really good Premier League player who had a great career. Good luck to the bloke.

….should be on the list twice.

Once for his footballing qualities on the pitch and once for his leadership qualities off it.

Captain, leader, legend.
