McKenna starting to get noticed on 13:12 - Sep 20 by MattinLondon | They didn’t really say a lot - just had the feel of a group of three people who tend to only watch the PL and don’t know a lot about the other 72 clubs. Young, doing well, and that’s it. |
When we were promoted in 1999/00 it was like nobody had heard of us in a zillion years and we were frankly laughed at. We then took a giant dump on the status quo and qualified for Europe. Sadly, we proved most right as they all had us down for a sharp fall from grace, and they celebrated in delight as we went back down again, I remember the BBC Pundits being particularly toxic about us. I'd expect the Luton treatment if we went up again, in fact we have almost got it from people in the Championship, as if the club is startled playing in front of such big crowds... Portman Road once hosted an England international ffs.

Hope you told him he was overrated and was lucky to have good players bought by Ashton.

McKenna starting to get noticed on 13:51 - Sep 20 by _clive_baker_ | It's not that I don't trust Ashton to find a replacement, but I honestly just don't think KM's grow on trees. There's plenty of good managers out there but I truly think he's just at a different level. The buy in he's managed to achieve is ridiculous, you just feel like the players hang on his every word. It would be such a blow to us if he left, but I think we're a bit insulated in that the size of club that would be worth jumping for probably wont be bold enough to come in for him. There's a very, very small number of clubs we're realistically exposed to when you visualize the intersection of a venn diagram of 'big enough to be tempted by' and 'bold / small enough to be looking to recruit from the Championship'. Palace, West Ham, Wolves, Everton maybe meet that definition, but while we're doing well he'll know he's got a chance here to do something remarkable and completely career defining. |
Agree with much of that although not convinced that a couple of the clubs mentioned will be that attractive in the forseeable future. If we remain towards the top of this division, KM will definitely attract attention of both pundits and other clubs. My hunch (and hope) is that would take an exceptional opportunity to tempt him away whilst we are doing well. ITFC is essentially McKenna’s project. He has a significant level of influence and control that would be unavailable in most clubs. Our ownership and finances are stable for the mid term. We are increasingly well run off the field (although still playing catch up after years of missteps and neglect). The playing squad has bought wholeheartedly into his methods, approach – his project. Importantly, he has time plus credit for winning promotion. KM has the scope and space do the job in his way. He knows that he is still early in his managerial career and has age/time on his side. A few settled seasons here is a good prep for something even bigger - his next project. I could be mistaken but I see several clubs who could offer more cash, better squads, possibly more potential but very few who could offer him that coupled with the stability, longer term focus and ability he has to shape a project that he has here. KM is bright – it will take something exceptional to lever him out of Portman Road.

Actually better leave Ashton out of it just in case. Better just to say we're lucky the club was left in such a good position by Marcus Evans
McKenna starting to get noticed on 15:37 - Sep 20 with 1350 views | dirtyboy | A few thoughts on McKenna from me; He's very measured, and knows what he wants and how to achieve it. I'm sure money is a big motivator, but I suspect it's not his top aim, that will be a natural result from what he wants to achieve. He's a Man Utd fan and will be very aware of how Ferguson largely built them up and reinvented them over and over. I've no doubt McKenna would want to do something similar. Prove himselve over and over. The current ownership group are treating this as a project and McKenna has a huge say in that. It's like getting a huge pile of lego and putting it together how he wants it, but each season, there's a shiny new pack of stuff to bolt on. We know the training ground is earmarked for significant improvement and I really believe he wants to not only manage at the top level (obvious) but takes great pride in building something. It might be very easy to walk into say a big Prem club with a huge budget, but it's all there and waiting for you....other than results and winning games! The job satisifaction here must be pretty high, winning games, part of a club building itself back up from the ashes, having a community that loves you, who will definitely give more time to as he's got more than enough credit in the bank to ride out any slump. He's also patient....he likes working with players to develop them, so he must be patient in that process and I think, at his age, he's happy here for at least a bit longer to see how it all pans out. Whilst the crowds are here, whilst he's being continually backed and we're doing well, we'll be okay.

McKenna is also still a young man. Continuing the Ferguson analogy, he didn't become Manager of ManU until he was 45, having first gained success with Aberdeen over the preceding 8 years (starting there at the age McKenna is now). There is plenty of time for McKenna to really prove himself over several more seasons at ITFC and still potentially have a long tenure at somewhere like ManU, if that is what he wishes. There is no need to rush off to a big job right now. Indeed, it might be better to allow the present crisis at Old Trafford to blow over (maybe including a change of ownership) beore he wants to take the reins.

Exactly, and over-arching the whole picture is that KM is clearly highly intelligent & will already have thought of everything said on this thread for himself! I'm confident he'll be with us till he has us established & thriving in the top half of the Prem :)

McKenna starting to get noticed on 13:52 - Sep 20 by Vegtablue | Not sure I would 😅 no disrespect to Ashton and co., just that it's very difficult to unearth managers of McKenna's ilk and I'm not aware he/they found such gems in his/their previous posts. |
Enjoy him whilst we have him - he’s going to the very top. We’ll be fine when he moves on but we could be more than fine if he stays long term. The owners would back him heavily in the premier league for sure but realistically if we go up and he does well he’ll get a big job pretty quickly. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
