YorkshireBlue's Guide to Huddersfield 15:49 - Sep 26 with 4424 viewsyorkshireblue

I used to live in Huddersfield – and made the journey back to Ipswich regularly as I had a season ticket at the time – so thought I could give a few pointers.

- If you SatNav is anything like mine, it’ll give you choice of the A1 or M1 – take the A1 option
- With the train strikes on, I’m guessing most people will be driving – in which case I’d recommend the Gas Works for parking. Whist the club is now closed (which is a shame as it was great for a pre-match beer) it looks as if it has been taken over by the club and you need to book to park there - https://www.eticketing.co.uk/huddersfieldtown/EDP/Event/Index/3055?position=6. Like many stadiums there are businesses which offer parking in their car parks along St Andrews Road which are normally cash on the day. I believe the Turnbridge Working Men’s Club also allows parking.
- If you are getting the train, then allow 20/25 mins to walk to the stadium. The Head of Steam at the station is a great pub;
- Away fans are welcome in The Yorkshire Rose (which will be rammed unless there early) and the Boy and Barrell. The Rope Walk, which is the closest pub to the ground is a designated home pub – but even if you’re not wearing colours I wouldn’t bother. It’s rubbish at the best of times and I imagine the queues at the bar will be heaving. Some of the other pubs will not be welcoming to away fans and are best avoided… general rule of thumb - avoid any that are advertising strippers on a midweek lunch time.
- Anyone staying longer, The Magic Rock Tap, The Parish, The Grove and Rat & Ratchet are nice places for a drink. Anyone wanting breakfast then https://www.yummyyorkshire.co.uk/ (which is a fair way out of town) is a good option.
- Depending which direction you come from https://www.marstonschickenshop.co.uk/ is well worth a pre-match visit (or the detour)…
- Whatever you do – don’t ask someone if they call it a roll/bap/barm/teacake as they have VERY strong opinions on this and you’ll be stuck there for hours

If anyone has any specific question fire away and I’ll try and help but it’s been several years since I went back.

I'll be driving up from Sheffield and have just booked the park at the Gas Works - think I know the Gas Works - its not the area surrounding the stadium is it ? Recently went to see Muse there and managed to park not too far away for free on a side street but was very lucky !

Added to the local watering holes, you also have the King's Head just to the left of the station, if you walk down the station past the Harold Wilson statue and turn left you have Williams Bar just on your right which will have Sky Sports etc, I believe the white shiyte are the early KO, and if you also turn left and go further than Williams bar just under the bridge you have The Sportsman (where I'll be) which has some lovely and cheap craft ales. (You should find some on street parking around this area also).

For you 'Spoons lovers there's The Cherry Tree. Or simply just head into the Town Centre, everywhere is within easy walking distance to the ground. One not to go into unless your looking for a black eye is The Vulcan.

Enjoy your day!

Good shout, although I prefer the pub at the other end of the platform the King's Head! The Sportsman round the corner from the station is another good beer pub.

Is the bit circled red the gas works car park?

I reckon I may park there and just head to the working mens club for a drink, was alright in there last time.

I reckon that’s got to be it Sitters. Driven past it many times and never really took much notice

I’ve booked the parking there myself anyway. Was only like £6.50 or something

I like the King’s Head - lovely stop on the Ale Trail - but the one time I went on a match day they were checking tickets to see if you was a home or away fan.

It wasn’t an Ipswich game though (sat with my mates in the home end) and I can’t remember who they were playing - if it was someone where most would have come by train imagine security might have been tighter?

Don't forget to hang out on the piazza for a while and look out for old punks to ask about the Sex Pistols last gig at the fire station.

Many thanks. Already booked parking at Gas Works and hoping to get there at lunchtime. Any recommendations for a good family friendly place nearby to get some food and a drink? Got an 8 year old and 74 year old in tow so can't trek too far. Marstons Chicken Shop looks nice but a bit out of our way! (I'm trying to justify the walk to Magic Rock tap....)

Makes a mental note to look out for midweek games in future seasons.

The Yorkshire Rose I mentioned does do food - but I’m not sure if it’s available on a match day. A quick look on their website shows you can’t book any tables until 3pm anyway.

My initial reaction would be The Aspley, which is a chain pub near the car park and walking distance if you want to park up first. https://www.tabletable.co.uk/en-gb/locations/yorkshire/the-aspley. It’s next to the Premier Inn and is fairly typical of the types of places you get to Premier Inns to give you an idea.

If it’s a nice day, try and get a table outside near overlooking the canal.

Yes I read about the Gas Works somewhere. Cheap parking for customers.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Any other options for parking a bit further out? Quite fancy a walk (half hour-hour) to the ground as will likely get there early. Prefer doing that after too, to let the traffic subside...

Yorkshire Rose on Leeds Road, but get there early! About a 10min walk...
