That thing where someone comments about something, without remotely understanding the thing they are commenting about.

I can't be alone in finding the current heady blend of low ignorance and high confidence to be both amusing and terrifying in equal measure. It seems to be pervading all walks of life in 2023.

Things you like to see - Laurence Fox taking Wottoon down with him on 13:53 - Sep 27 by DJR | Agreed. I first came across him in Two Men in a Trench, and have watched all his history/archaeology programmes. I particularly remember him presenting a series on Scottish history, where the role of Scots in the slave trade was treated as a matter of shame. I can't imagine him taking that line these days. He was a sh1te archaeologist with a pretty basic understanding of history/prehistory. Could never understand how he got on the TV in the first place. Always imagined he had friends or family in high places

I can easily forgive Jacob for that. Whoever his handler is, their an absolute comedy genius. Malcolm Meatball head and other comedy creations could learn a lot from this one

I remember he was a vociferous and oft-platformed voice against Scottish independence around the referendum. And only slightly less loony than now. Being on the right side of the establishment (and the right more generally) he was always going to get promoted — and paid.

Yer, I'm sure it's something like that. Thing is there are plenty of 'archaeologists' who are on the right side of the establishment just could never understand why this gobsh1te was selected above them

Academics getting on TV very rarely related to their expertise really. For the most part it's a combination of how readily you answer your phone to every media request and how comfortable you are on camera.

Yep, definitely true. But even then there are plenty of archaeologists desperate to raise there archaeological profiles and eager to answer every media request. Usually even if they dont have the capability of accurately answering said questions. Just always wondered why he was selected from so many other inadequate options

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/passed-failed-an-education-in Seems like he left archaeology after his MA to retrain as a journalist. So I guess it was a case of being a broadcaster with a small amount of expertise, rather than an expert with a bit of skill as a broadcaster. Like Dan Snow's career, I suppose. (Makes sense that they aren't working academics. I get the occasional media request related to my academic work but with a full teaching and research load you just don't have the time to pursue it even if you want to!) Oof an arrow through my classicist heart Stoke! The struggle against standardization of British spelling here, trampling on the -izein suffix at the behest of the French, continues with Oxford in the vanguard and your good self slightly further behind Jacob Nikons. Yet in truth this tide 🌊 is not for turning and instead we look a couple of hundred years out of date. Perhaps it is time to re-evaluate our position.

Yet no one has upvoted it either. Is that because those of a right leaning persuasion are reluctant to show their support, or as is more likely, most people agree it's complete bobbins? Where's DaveU when you need him? PS. Superb profile pic. Not seen that in a while.

I am not going to counter any criticism of Laurence Fox as i think he was bang out of order to say what he said, and has rightly been suspended by GB News along with his pal Wootton. But I do agree with his point that conservative views on here are often jumped on by a certain gang. Some of it quite vitriolic as he says or shouted down and labelled "thickos" etc. Jeera being a good example and got himself banned for being nasty in his responses. He tried to make a comeback at the weekend but couldn't help himself in being abusive so quickly found himself banned again. Yeah my avatar is a classic TWTD cover!

Fowler's Modern English Usage prefers "z" because of the "z" in the Greek root of many such words, but acknowledges that certain words such as advertise do not get their "ise" remotely from Greek. He suggests learning the exceptions but that has always struck me as more effort than it is worth, so I follow Gowers' The Complete Plain Words which says. "the British writer has the advantage over the American that we may, if we wish, use an "s" all the time, for that will never be wrong, whereas "z" sometimes will be. But do not condemn those who use a "z" in the right place." [Post edited 28 Sep 2023 16:01]

At this rate, he'll soon have enough sackings from media organisations to qualify him as a future Conservative Prime Minister.

I must've missed Jeera's cameo. I think I've ever only seen Hazzer label people as "thickos", but there may be others. I'm a dyed in the wool leftie bumfester myself, but try to avoid direct slanging matches if I can. Some great threads have been ruined by both sides over the years.
