Has just said that cutting inflation by half to 5% means a “boost to people’s pockets”.
Completely ignoring that prices will still be rising at 5% per year.

Coupled with wages rising 7.8%, he’s right.

5% inflation is still a disaster, it really bugs me how anyone tries to present it as a win. I look after the money in my job, and 10% followed by 5% are going to give me budget headaches for years to come, as those increases are now baked in.

Agree. Too many people think that prices will go back to what they used to be when inflation falls.

They are in for a shock.

We can argue & cherry pick the data forever, but the reality is that inflation is a global problem, not just a UK problem. And yes, the current government hasn't done a particularly good job of dealing with it.

No cherry picking involved, was highlighting the fact that EU inflation will continue to fall and remain below the U.K. figure.

Worth noting that the CPI inflation metric doesn’t include the single biggest cost rise people are facing - mortgage interest. Great- the cost of your weekly shop as Tesco is going up slightly less quickly, but you need to find several hundred pounds a month more for your mortgage…

I don’t know if this is the case, but I suspect the wage rises are distorted by the number of people on the minimum wage which has increased by around 10pc?

And jumping another 10% next year. Crazy.

Listening to the guy talk now, it's incredibly how many times they have to refer back to 'Labour will do this or Labour did this' - do they just forget they have been in power for ten years?

Not if inflation was at 10+% the previous year, which the 7.8% was a retrospective response to.

I can't believe you are cheerleading for this shower again.

I thought you had been weaned off the naiive belief that they gave a sheet about small businesses.

They are PR people for hire, willing to sociopathically spin any old line, peddle any manky fib, point in the direction of any vulnerable group to incite hatred, all to conceal the truth that they are the grifting servants of the 0.5%.

Playing devils advocate to that, the 7.8% rise was in response to the 10% plus inflation that impacted prices in winter 22 and spring 23.

That's not even devil's advocate, it's a very straightforward and demonstrable truth.

If mortgage payments were included in the CPI, then monetary policy - the Central Bank's main weapon for controlling inflation - would become far less effective.

Perhaps counter-intuitively, CPIH which includes owner occupiers housing costs was lower in August than CPI.

It’s a blunt tool in commodity driven inflation anyway. Raising interest rates is as much about propping up sterling in the light of Fed rises. However, they can’t really go admitting we don’t have monetary independence from the US…
