Things to do in Suffolk in December the week after Xmas 15:05 - Oct 17 with 6573 viewsIllinoisblue

Aside from the obvious (hanging out on Portman Road offering to sell a kidney for a ticket to Leicester and QPR games) what might be a decent day out in the Suffolk area for a family visiting from US? Bit of history, bit of culture, bit of walking. Obvs the weather could impact. Any ideas?

Sutton Hoo - worth a visit?

Southwold/Aldeburgh - is one better/more intersting than the other?

Further afield, Cambridge?

Cambridge would tick history and culture.

Tonnes in Suffolk though, I prefer Southwold to Aldeburgh as it has bigger, sandy beaches, the Adnams brewery and more interesting pubs and shops imho

Snape Maltings

Orford Castle

Ramsholt Arms the other side of Woodbridge one of the great pubs with a view to die for

Ramsholt Arms is a good shout - they do good food. Go for a meal and then do the walk up to the Church which used to be a lookout tower for spotting naughty vikings trying to get up the Deben

Speaking as an occasional holiday maker to Suffolk, I'd say Southwold is more interesting than Alderburgh, although both are very pretty. Edit: its the harbour that sets Southwold apart, i reckon.

The chap above who mentions Snape Maltings - thats good advice.

I did Sutton Hoo and loved it, except it wasn't the real mask thingy in there- just a replica.

Your Ed's town is nice too - forgotten what its called.

Framlingham - it has a castle on the hill.

Bury St Edmunds for retail therapy

The north end of Lowestoft is nice if the weather is decent, two interesting museums.

I went there a few years ago. Loved it. I am fascinated by local history and it was nostalgic to hop on one of the old AEC Regents and remember the clippy who came round to issue your 5p fare for one of the long yellow tickets with red ink.

Wasn't able to have a fag on the top deck to fully recount the experience though.

Check the opening times - quite often only open on Sundays in the off season.

Quite liked the idea of Orford Castle but just checked their website and it’s closed all Xmas week.

Requires venturing beyond Suffolk but Colchester Zoo well worth a visit.

Sticking to Suffolk, Felixstowe is also nice, right from the north end (Felixstowe ferry) to the south (Landguard Fort and Point).

Trimley Nature reserve is nice too. Can certainly get your 10,000 steps a day in and around there.

Christchurch Mansion perhaps - it has the benefit of free admission

Then for culture you could try:
This year's "rock 'n' roll" panto at the Wolsey is Dick Whittington (and his cat)
Or there's Vicki Michelle in the Regent's panto, Sleeping Beauty

You know what that’s a great shout on the panto. Never been to one in my life so why not start now.

Sutton Hoo is well worth a visit. Although it makes little of the fact that Mrs Pretty (the lady on whose land the excavations were made) was the widow of an Ipswich-based underpants manufacturer.

Another good spot for a post-Xmas walk to blow the cobwebs away is Ickworth.

For something a little different which should entertain teenagers, there's Twisted Oaks bike park at Brightwell. They do bike, including ebike, and helmet hire. It's a little weather dependent but great fun!

If you go to Snape Maltings it's worth checking nowish to see what's on over that week as might be some good shows. The restaurant/ cafe has great views as well so worth a look.

I prefer Aldeburgh to Southwold as it's smaller, love the cinema in the evening and then a stroll along the sea.

The cold war museum at rendlesham / bentwaters might also give a bit more American flavour to the trip for the family.

Dedham on the Essex / Suffolk border is also a nice place to stop just off the A12, the sun pub is great and the tollbooth a top notch resto.

We'll be there around the same time and those are some of the things we'll be doing.

If you like motorcycles, there is the David Silver Honda museum in Leiston, which has what must be almost a complete collection of Honda motorcycles.
Maybe not so much for teenagers, but the Suffolk Punch stables which were excellent for elderly parents.

Framlingham is nice for a day - castle in that weather might be a bit rum though.
Southwold/Dunwich/Walberswick - decent walks, pubs and sights aplenty between them
Halesworth - 'nuff said
Norwich is a decent day trip too as you have the medieval parts too (no not the Carrow Rd vicinity)
Any of Constable country will be an experience for your kids too I suspect.

A quick trip around the northern bypass to Snoasis?

Some good ideas here, but all going to be very weather dependent. It could be bitter on the coast if there’s an east wind. Sutton Hoo for example is more about walking around outside than the relatively small exhibition (although I’d recommend it).

A walk from Walberswick to Southwold across the heath is probably as quintessentially Suffolk as you could find. With a good selection of pubs at the end of course (or half way if you go out and back).

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

In addition to the many excellent suggestions that have already been posted, I would recommend the Maybush Inn at Waldringfield. Good food, superb views, and a bracing post lunch estuary walk awaits you.
Further afield, Thorpeness is very pretty and there’s a nice coastal walk (approx 40 minutes) to Aldeburgh that has many pubs and restaurants.
Only downside is that there’s quite a lot of salmon trousered chino types who drive 4 by 4’s in these places. Apologies in advance if that’s your demographic!

The Walberswick-Southwold area is definitely my favourite place in Suffolk.

I can vouch for the rock n roll panto at the Wolsey, we’ve been for the last 8-9 years and it’s very good.

Cambridge would be a shoo-in for any visitors from the US, you can constantly tell them there’s buildings here hundreds of years older than America.

Generally agree Southwold comments, although to give the family the best fish and chip experience, it might be worth stopping at Aldeburgh.

You could also take them around Ipswich town centre to see all the empty shops, mobile phone and vaping outlets and wistfully say how much better the town centre was thirty years ago. But you can do that by reading the comments section on the Star’s Facebook page.

The rock panto at the New Wolsey is always superb.

The panto at the Regent is also usually good fun - Yasmin is dancing in it for the third year running at certain performances (last year included her singing a solo as well, which was a very proud dad moment!)
