Our style of play 20:46 - Dec 21 with 3221 views | jasondozzell | Just watching Palace Brighton. Brighton have been very good side even if they've gone a bit off the boil. Game is okay but can't say the football is that good. It got me thinking that I can't really remember seeing a team recently who have played a better style of football than us... It's not just that we've been successful under Kmac, it's the way we've done it. I love the way he sees the game. We never keep the ball for the sake of it. We look after it and retain possession well but it's always with an eye to try to score. Relentless. And we control the tempo of the game so well in order to then attack with real pace when we see an opportunity. It's very different to say City. I suppose we're more like Liverpool. But I honestly haven't seen many teams as easy on the eye as us over last two seasons! The quality of McKenna's coaching and impact is extraordinary. And although the style has evolved and been refined, it's been there since the very beginning. Gillingham away in the rain - that was only weeks in and we already had some of his principles embedded. It's a bit more advanced that Lambert getting us to split the CBs at every goal kick...Or Roy playing 4 CBs as a back four. Or Jewell's short lived diamond (although Lee Martin played well in that system for brief period). The success is great but to be doing this in such style is brilliant. Can you name a better looking style at home or in Europe?! I genuinely think we're one of the best to watch.

I’m certainly not taking anything away from KM, he’s done an outstanding job, but you can’t really compare like for like. If we are fortunate enough to go up, playing in the EPL week in, week out is a totally different beast to what we are dealing with at the moment. It’s great being involved in games against Leeds and Leicester over the coming days, important matches at the right end of the league which looked a distant memory 2 or 3 seasons ago. Let’s enjoy what we are currently experiencing it’s a wonderful journey the club is on, before we look too far ahead of ourselves.

I don’t think the OP is trying to compare like for like. Just looking at teams playing styles regardless of their division. Of course we won’t be able to do what we do now in the PL with this team. But we are doing it with this team in the Championship. Just like we did it with this team in league one.

Agree. Game by game. And just got to enjoy it all! There's a part of me that thinks Championship football and challenging at the top like we are is far more fun than the PL would ever be. No VAR etc. But it would be exciting to see McKenna test himself against the very best.

Yes! I know I'm biased but honestly think our style is the most enjoyable to watch... Liverpool in full flight are something else and Spurs good fun but love how we set up. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I totally agree JD. I much prefer to watch the Championship it’s a much more even playing field than the EPL. Look at the struggle Burnley have had this season after winning the Championship at a canter last season. However, I’d like to see us back there to see what we can do, but I do think the EPL is a poisoned chalice that has a habit of ruining clubs.

Exactly. It's pretty much a closed shop up there. Yes, there's the odd Leicester, Brighton etc. but the reality would be we'd probably be in a mini league at the bottom end trying to survive... Burnley as you say. Champ is great. Anyone can beat anyone and lots of different approaches!

After all these years outside the Prem, it would nice to be find out, whatever happens It was a different beast under Burley and we were probably more ready for it, having developed a squad over multiple seasons Our style of play is certainly decent, it's the jump up in athleticism and physicality I'd be a bit worried about currently but that could be addressed in a transfer window or two

It certainly is top level and very entertaining although a plan B needs to develop and maybe we will see it in the next two games as a way of seeing which players are able to step up against top quality opposition. Going forward the prem must be the target and using the funds to replace the ageing defensive midfield pair so we dont get whooped week in week out would then be the aim. Also to allow KMK to achieve his dream of getting us there and maybe stay to put in a plan before moving on he will deserve. I for one am looking forward again to watching what happens and pleased I have towntv to see it on . Onwards and Upwards with ITFC. David
Our style of play on 04:06 - Dec 22 with 2473 views | BigCommon | The fact that we stick to our principles, just means we get better and better at the style we want to play in. Yeah, we'll have the odd hiccup. But the style is so easy on the eye, free scoring, entertaining and above all successful. You can just brush aside the odd hiccup and not have endless talk about what we should be changing. Still think there is more to come from KM. I love our squad, they are all heroes. But we do still have limitations on what we can expect from some players. The squad will need to evolve, in order to get the best from KM's abilities as a coach, imo. I feel like the squad is going flat out, but KM is still in 2nd gear.
Our style of play on 07:10 - Dec 22 with 2339 views | ArnoldMoorhen | My gut feeling is that we play in this style in about two-thirds of games. In the other third, teams have a physicality and a system which negates us effectively and either limit us to only spells where we play fluidly, or, exceptionally rarely (WBA) are able to shut down our game almost completely. The question is whether, if we are able to be promoted, the more physical Prem teams would be able to shut us down more often, because they are better at doing that than physical Championship teams, and whether low block teams who are used to having to hold out against Salah or Haaland will be able to cope with Hirst or Chaplin. Who knows? I would rather we tried to continue to play positive, fluid, attacking football than bring in some mercenary athletes and play a low block 4-5-1, not least because 3 points for a win makes playing for a draw very nearly, erm, pointless. You've just got to win a dozen games and pick up a few draws! So the best path to survival, or the most honourable road to relegation, is to stick to principles and try and win every match.

Spot on. IMO, we're better off emulating the teams which anyway mostly beat the low block outfits. Where ManU have gone wrong (according to mates who are fans of theirs) is by going defensive or total possession and neglecting the attacking side of the game with threats from all over the pitch which Alex Ferguson utilised. Hirst may not be Salah or Haaland, but he's cut from the same cloth - strong, quick and with a sharp brain for seizing an advantage or making a chance for someone else. We have players on the lookout for exploiting the loose ball or rebound. Also happy to shoot from distance or through a crowd. We can attack wide or through the middle. Also, Town have had a lot of practice against the various forms of block in League One.

As you say we have 'players on the lookout for exploiting the loose ball or rebound'. We create and win a huge number of second balls and that really is a strength, especially in the centre of midfield. Often, our opponents are most vulnerable when they have the ball because it can be two touches away from going at 100mph in the other direction for them.

Lots of practice but not much success I may add. We never perform against teams that play a low block against us. Remember Cheltenham, Lincoln last season and Huddersfield not too long ago - we struggle to break them down. Leeds are another team that are just like us. It will be an interesting match today.
