Totally Outplayed and Outclassed Today. 14:11 - Dec 23 with 5629 viewsStochesStotasBlewe

70 odd million pounds worth of strikeforce against us doesn't help, but bloody hell, we haven't been able to lay a glove on them.
Re group for boxing day and hopefuuly show up for that.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

We always show the opponent respect. That's part of the reason we're so successful.

Up to now, but it didn't feel so today. They had so much room on our flanks. Grind it out, make their fans impatient. Even at 1-0, how were we left so exposed for their second? Especially after the massive warning sign from the Portman Road game.

I'm more supportive of the guy who managed us between 2014 and 2018 than most but can accept he was sometimes too overly defensive for his own good. Today, we could have done with his approach. We learn and move on - Leicester will be interesting.

Two home games coming up. If we can get 4/6 that's a decent return.

The defeat isn't really the issue today; it's the manner of it.

Fingers crossed we can at least nick a draw with Leicester, the team will have to be really fired up for that one. Hopefully we can replicate the Hull game. Play like today and it will be another heavy defeat. From what I have watched on TV so far, Leicester may not have such a deadly and clinical forward line and seldom go all out attack but they pass the ball and defend way better than Leeds.

We have already dropped 5 points to Leeds and the scum over the past week, the gap is closing and we can't afford to drop more points especially when Leeds and Southampton are bang on form now.

Leeds are pretty similar to us in the sense they struggle against teams in a low block. They dropped points to Coventry just last week with the exact same starting XI. They also drew with Sheff Wed and Rotherham. By playing our usual attacking and open game we were there for the taking with their vastly superior (at least individually) players. Why go to Leeds and attack their de facto Prem wingers with our attacking fullbacks? It is a kamikaze mission in a game which we didn't have to win. A draw would do.

I thought McK would have learnt from the 3-4 loss at home but apparently not. Sometimes we have to play "smart" rather than stick to our usual style. The best teams change their formation and style according to the occasion. Would you rather play ugly and get 1 point or try to play as usual and get a trashing with 0 points? We need a Plan B which we don't seem to have at the moment.

Continue to play kamikaze v Leicester on Boxing Day and I am afraid it will be another footballing lesson from Mavididi, Dewsbury-Hall, Vardy & Co.

I dont see Man City playing in a low block away from home. McK ball is our identity, like it or not.

We were pressing them for the second, they managed to get out and broke quickly. We still had enough men back in our box to deal with it, it was just poor from Leif, he got his positioning all wrong to be able deal with the ball. How many sides can seamlessly successfully switch from playing like a McKenna team to playing like a Mick team? That's not how football works. We have a way of playing, we make adjustments game to game. Leeds will do the same as well. To suggest we didn't respect them is a rather lazy and unfair criticism, imo.

I think two things can be true

1) They are a better team than us
2) We played very badly today and made it about as easy as we could do for them

No shame in losing to them, but we definitely have a poor account of ourselves. Probably one of only a few performances since McK came in that has been that bad.

The goal was on 7 minutes, they got behind was within 90 seconds with Davis pushing high. It was there all day for them I thought.

For some reason, Davis was 10 yards higher up the pitch than he normally is for home games straight from the off. Left us very exposed and also affected Clarke's positioning on the other flank too.

Our second half display was poor, but we were never 3-0 worse in the first half. The ref was letting all their fouls go and penalising us every time. It was the usual "back the big club" display from the ref that we've seen so many times in the past.
Admittedly we weren't at our best, but goals change matches and the fact that their twelfth man was playing such a blinder played a big factor in that.
Had Chappo's shot gone in........

But sometimes it's good to show respect to an opponent. It's been a great approach overall but naive today. Having Davis so high and leaving James in so much space, for example, was Christmas coming slightly early for Leeds.

I don’t really get what people mean when they say ‘show respect for an opponent’.

The best teams don’t show respect for anybody bar a few mealy mouthed words before and after a game. The good teams play their game and let the opposition do the worrying. They let them find a plan B, C, D and E.

KM set the team up to hurt Leeds and to win, just as he did at home. I like that - it’s brave and if you are good enough will work more often than not. I’d much prefer that than setting up timidly against Leeds and walking away with a respectable 1-0 or 2-0 loss.

If you have a poor team like that MM inherited you have to change it and dig trenches. It’s what he did after hapless Jewell shambled away and rightly so. But we are better than that and McKenna’s way of playing works.

Improve the players we have and our way of playing if we can, replace one or two players when we can. Evolution. Just because we’ve struggled in a couple of games (and may well do again in the next month) it is no reason to change the way we play. It’s exciting and devastating to most of our opponents. We are not far off having an exceptional team for this level in my view.

Even Bobby Robson’s great teams got the odd hiding (who else was at Crystal Palace when we got thumped by Venables’ ‘team of the 80s’?). It happens.
