Can we start when the actual government starting acting like adults?

They've been pulling sh1t like this since 2016, at least. Hardly surprising that the practice is endemic now.

No spin required. A woman makes perfectly reasonable impassioned point. He laughs and turns his back on her whilst she is mid sentence. Literally. No social understanding or courtesy at all.

The logic behind saying waiting lists fell when there were NHS strikes is staggering.

He's in effect saying that the best way to slash NHS waiting lists is for the NHS to not do any work.

He was saying the opposite. Essentially claiming the only reason we have waiting lists is because the strikes have prevented progress.

FFS. Are you incapable of telling the truth? He didn't claim that the "only reason we have waiting lists is because the strikes have prevented progress". He said that in the two months that there were no NHS strikes, the waiting list fell.

That is factually correct. According to the Nuffield Trust, 104,881 operations and 780,273 outpatient appointments were rescheduled, over the 42 days of strikes since December last year. They state in their report that this is probably an underestimate.

This government is on it's last legs. The sooner they are done the better. But this constant misrepresentation doesn't do anyone any favours. There are so many genuine reasons to hit the government. Why make stuff up?

Not a defence of Sunak but that is an edited clip and the full clip shows that he didn't just laugh and walk away. They continued the conversation and part ways by shaking hands.

[Post edited 19 Jan 2024 15:13]

Well, he talked over her in order to end the conversation and she offered him a handshake by placing her arm across him, which he had to accept in order to move on.

The laugh is the telling moment in the whole exchange, as is him turning his back and walking away while she was speaking about the long wait endured by a family member. It is only because she persevered that the conversation ended as it did, so it is reasonable for the clip to be edited to stop there.

She was dismissed as a silly old person who wanted to go back to the old days.

Which was disingenuous. She was asking for the NHS to go back to being functional.

My takeaway from this is that modern leaders of political parties don't like interactions with the public, as everything, with spin doctors lurking in the background, has to be controlled these days.

It's a bit like the way they don't answer interviewers questions.

You just can't imagine politicians in days of old shirking a good argument with a member of the public or not answering an interviewer's question.

1000% this.

If someone had made the same type of editing decision in a Starter or Corbyn video the same people defending it now would be all over it.

As I've said before I don't like Sunak. But he said nothing today that isn't borne out in facts and it's debasing our politics even further to justify something that's wrong just because it's aimed in a direction that's convenient.

As someone who was highly critical of Corbyn and has never voted Labour in his life, I am calling BS. Each on its merits. I have no doubt that the footage was edited for effect, and ought not to have been. However, the longer footage DOES NOT CHANGE WHAT HE DID!

Your second para quite deliberately avoids the actual points being made and makes a strawman, answered by saying he was stating facts. I very much doubt he was, though I haven't fact checked. But even if he was, why are there strikes? And if the asnwer is- money- why is there a tax cut...

None of that, however, changed the utter disdain with which he treated a fellow human being, making a fair, impassioned point.

Your middle para is the key bit for me. Sunak identifies that stopping strikes is what is needed, and when the lady tries to tell him that he has the power to do something about that, he loudly laughs at her.

The short sightedness of shafting public sector workers over 14 years, is staggering. The inability to understand why this now needs addressing and that they are reasonable in saying they have had enough is breathtaking.

Even if you maintain staffing, that staffing is demotivated, inexperienced (and constantly moving on when the opportunity presents) and in many cases starts to do what is necessary and no more. So it actually makes the sector less efficient. It gives less for the same money. So they spend money on systems and tech and training new staff, whilst demanding more for less from them. And around and around the circle goes.

Will leave it there. There is zero to be gained in having a debate with anyone who thinks that belongs in any intelligent discussion.

On the basis that Sunak and this Government are reckless with their deployment of statistics, there is sound reason to doubt a claim thrown out to deflect someone he considers inferior, on the spur of the moment. See recent ONS comments on the "backlog" of asylum applications as an example.

A very fair point. All a good diversion from this, though:

Tata rubbing their hands at the hand outs. This will decimate this region. It’ll be like the collapse of the coal mines all over again (and they’ve never fully recovered from that). Port Talbot isn’t exactly the best of places now. Throw in another near 3,000 unemployed with no similar work opportunities nearby and the place will be in a real mess.

I understand why they want to change the furnaces, but the govt handout was supposed to make that possible.

I heard yesterday that Tata Steel makes up 3% of the Welsh economy (presumably not taking into account all the associated business). That is an enormous blow to its economy.

The closures will also mean that Britain is the only G20 country that can’t make virgin primary steel. Virgin steel is used in everyday products such as tin cans. These will now have to be produced abroad, and it is unlikely that they will be manufactured in the UK again in future.
