What a sh!tty, greedy, scummy society we've become. 08:07 - Feb 2 with 5616 viewsNthQldITFC

Listening to David Henderson, chief executive of Water UK, shamelessly trying to justify further above inflation rises in water bills and the syphoning off of the wealth, health and future of British citizens to offshore 'investors' just makes me want to puke.

Why the hell do we put up with this sh!t? Why have we all sold our souls to hang onto the shirt-tails of the patently flawed fantasy of progress through perpetual growth? It's insanity. Please make it stop.

Nationalise fundamental infrastructure now!

There's an item on today's news about rainwater runoff from our roads, containing poisonous chemicals. I didn't catch it all, but stopping that is mindboggling. Perhaps something is needed for motorways and may already be factored but its all such a massive problem.

all new road developments are supposed to come with sustainable drainage schemes embedded (eg. directed runoff into retention ponds etc).... but yes, the toxic pollution in runoff from our motorways and dual carriageways is very damaging to our watercourses and aquatic ecosystems

years of tory propaganda has led to this. trains never ran on time so they say . has there been a great improvement. electric ,water ,gas never had to pay investors like they do now.
local government did away with their manual work force , look at the state of our roads now private companies look after most of the roads.
still the nhs next in line for the private companies after all look at the success at the above

You almost sound surprised. It’s no surprise at all. The UK has long been a complete cesspit and with the way it is run is still going to get worse. The powers that be want it to be this way because they would not be so thick to have made so many mistakes over the years. To think it’s called‘Great’Britain is mental.

Thatcher's still got us all hypnotised - country needs to be exorcised.

Everybody with half a brain cell can see that the growth-obsessed, profit-focussed, short-term system we and the rest of the world runs on, HAS to run out of headroom at some point.

How much social and environmental catastrophe will we let happen because we're too cosy living on our literal and metaphorical credit cards before we actually face up to this and leave our kids a little hope for the future?

The hag hasn’t got me hypnotised. I refused to look out of the window of my office in Parliament Street when the box went by. The only thing that could have induced me to do that was to check the creature was still in it. May she rot in hell.

Of course the utilities should be nationalised. The scumbags rinsing the people of this country cannot physically remove reservoirs (those they’ve not sold off for building) or any other aspect of critical infrastructure. I include the Dartford crossing, power stations, you name it. They’ve had their money. Tell them to do one. Buy them all back for £1.

Alternately beef up the regulations on things like investment and sewage along with the fines. Literally price them out then buy them for £1. ‘It will stop investment in this country’ what investment is that? There hasn’t been a penny piece invested since 2016, so who cares. In fact, investors may even be interested in putting money into a country that cares about itself.

Consequences? Do me a favour. Flogging off the country’s assets is one of the main reasons why our credit rating has gone down the pan.

It makes no sense to me why a water company should make profits from its population. It should be non-profit, every penny and more going into maintaining and improving the network.

See also the railway network. Slowly remove all these rubbish franchises one by one and nationalise so not to cause meltdown. Put every penny into improvements and maintenance. If a current franchise is doing well, let them continue but make sure the network is joined up.

Interested in hearing more about labours plans to create a new electricity company. If its similar to what I have in my head its a gamechanger, but make it competative with eventual profits going to the treasury.

The rail network is nationalised, it's called network rail.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Ok, it’s a bit old but my understanding is that U.K. passengers subsidise the good people of Europe’s travel. I’m sure they’re grateful.

Fair enough

I see it was nationalised after the disaster that was privatised Railtrack. All the more easy to nationalise the services themselves and run them for the benefit of the U.K. instead of the European traveller. Seems insane that we invented railways as we know them yet get fleeced.

Every penny of subsidies received from the public purse should be regarded as an investment in shares as it was with the banks thst would have gone under.

Problem with nationalising fundamental infrastructure is:
- The government will pay over the odds for it as "compensation"
- It will be deliberately underfunded and poorly run to demonstrate nationalisation is "inefficient".
- It will then get sold back to the private sector for a fraction of the cost.

Country's rotten and needs more than just nationalisation.

Yes, it’s a total joke. However, it’s now become standard behaviour from companies, it’s all too easy to blame inflated costs to justify their prices hikes, all companies do it. Will we see any of it making any improvements? Of course we won’t, we’ll just see their profits grow, like all other firms in various sectors whilst we bend over and take it!! It really is shameless, but it just highlights it’s all about making money and that’s all that really matters. Just hope we get to a point where we all say, enough is enough instead of just keeping paying out.

Elvis Costello wrote a biting song which mirrored your views on Mrs T.

And this was a song I played throughout the 80s, and played with gusto when she did eventually stand down.

The other problem, as I mentioned above, is that it will be incompetence that is nationalised, given the expertise that used to pervade the nationalised industries has all gone.

To take an example, it was under the nationalised United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority that the UK established the world's first civil nuclear programme.

The contrast with the disaster that is Hinckley Point C couldn't be greater.

maybe i have got my figures wrong. the average standing charge for water is £68 a year for maintenance of the infrastructure. so when they tell us they investing 96 billion in water over 5 years its the standing charge money not out of profits.
my maths is 28 and a half million homes in the uk times £ 68 is £ 19 billion times 5 years is 95 billion. so the spin is look at the money we putting into water infrastructure.
i expect someone will tell me if my maths is wrong or correct

Funny thing was I was doing a dial in when the box was going by. ‘What’s that?’ said the people on the call. Mrs Thatcher’s funeral said I - had to be a bit careful/PC as you never quite know the views of people with something like that.

‘Are you sure you don’t want to go and pay your respects?’’We can reconvene in 15 mins’. That’s when I lost it.
‘You’ve got to be flippin joking!’ said I. And then went Ito a mild disrespectful rant including having to pay through taxes for a state funeral of a creature I’d have happily buried with a bulldozer at no cost.

I then heard the laughter on the call. They’d wound me up beautifully.
