Hitchin Town FC 10:00 - May 29 with 4169 viewsSharkey

Reading about their un-relegation, I was looking at Hitchin Town FC.

Suppose you moved to Hitchin, could you bring yourself to go along to their games on occasion to support local football?

I live locally and really struggle every time I drive past their ground. I go to a different non-league team if Town aren't playing!

Yup.

That was a very confused article, and there is a much better way of justifying a crest change than saying the industries represented on the crest are outdated. They then say "we’re a football club with a great and famous history – so we feel it appropriate to display this" but they are effectively erasing their history from their crest.

They play in the same league as Telford (and still do now they have been reprieved). On the PA, as a matter of course, I use the team nickname when announcing substitutions and there were a few good'uns last season - The Comrades, The Bards, The Daniels, The Crows, The Church, The Suds, The Brakes and The Marketmen amongst others. However I don't and won't use Hitchin's nickname, nor Barwell who have the same unfortunate moniker.

That certainly is a fine list of names!

I specially like 'the Daniels', who are named after Britain's heaviest ever person, who died in 1809. (I just looked this up.)

Berkhamsted, Stratford Town, Stamford, Royston Town, Alvechurch, AFC Sudbury, Leamington and Needham Market.

God bless the Southern League. Next season we welcome (amongst others) The Tulips, Eagles, Waders, Puritans and Trawler Boys. I think the last one who are local-ish to Ipswich have nicked our idea.

The new crest celebrates their participation in a cup competition years ago. How very ‘on brand’.

I used to live at Campton, which almost joins Shefford. I like Hitchin - it seems a nice town with some very pleasant green areas and great long distance views over the hills towards Barton-le-Cley.

I did once see Ipswich play at Hitchin's ground against Luton (Reserves). Kiwomya and BamBam played, returning from injury.

Ipswich did this in the 70s...

My brother used to live there and I think he found it hard to get behind them, watched Stevenage and Watford instead.

Saw this post a while ago and thought I’d add the tawdry story behind that logo.

I am a graphic designer from Hitchin, I’ve seen the team untold times since I was a kid. I've cleared snow off the pitch, I've helped at 'spring cleaning' days, I've contributed to fundraisers etc etc. I designed numerous items for the club over the years and proposed a new club badge long before this (sadly the suggestion gained no traction at the time).

A few years ago someone inflicted themselves upon the club and started to impose their idea of a new badge, which initially was hilariously bad. I was asked to collaborate with them but this person gained control of the project and I was effectively sidelined and excluded from the process. It was pretty much a fait accompli by the time I found out.

Despite all the deceit, I still hoped the new badge could be something to behold, but it is bland, uninventive and utterly uninspiring. It says nothing at all about the town, and each time I look at that canary it seems to be cowering.

This badge is more about an ego and the padding of a portfolio than it is about an exciting new identity for an historic football club.

I live in the area. Hitchin is a lovely town. Most in north herts seem to follow Spurs. A few arsenal and a smattering of Cambridge Utd fans. Stevenage fan base is very much limited to Stevenage.
