I dont get this thing about a "dirge". Its old fashioned, its hymnal / a national anthem. As most are. Nothing wrong with it. Is what it is.
The americans however. Just so ott and sung with so much faux emotion as to be utterly obnoxious.
It's awful. It doesn't even mention the country!
A song asking a mythical being to save our noble and gracious, unelected head of state is hardly rousing
I genuinely wonder, with the amount of time and money invested in analysing everything in sport to give the smallest of marginal improvements in performance, whether a national anthem that was upbeat and actually about our country, could give us more of an edge

Not that we can complain when was the last time our national anthem was sung properly at the FA Cup final or at the British Grand prix.
Its crazy last weekend at Le Mans tens of thousands of French people and plenty of other nationals joined in singing a proper rendition of La Marsellaise, absolutely made the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
Why can't they just sing anthems properly like that

Most anthems are old fashioned. Most anthems also happen to be about the country they are representing.
Just because something is old doesn't mean we have to persist with it.

Give me a Flower of Scotland type anthem over GSTK any day!
Land of hope and glory is the English anthem isn't it ? Although Jerusalem has been used at the Commonwealth games for English gold medals and the cricket,although the cricket used to be England and Wales cricket board...the UK anthem..GSTK ... not sure what we'd replace it with but there is some lovely newish anthems from a variety of countries isn't there.
Maybe we should just do Will Griggs on fire....its so confusing isnt:it

Really a non issue. I'm just bored with people going on about it and (almost invariably) letting everyone know that they think its a dirge....
