Davis & England 16:17 - May 29 with 8042 viewsFrimleyBlue

Having this chat with my son earlier.. I can't quite work out why he's been ignored by Southgate.

At first I thought it was the slight weakness of his game which is defending, but when you look back, he's learned from earlier games in his town career where he was the easy target with floated balls to the back post, so i'm going to say tick that improvement box.
Then there's the engine, he was always great at getting forwards, maybe not so then getting back, he's clearly doing both and not only that but even in the last 10 minutes of the game he's still doing both jobs, so another tick.

With how much england tend to control games too, i dont understand why he's not being picked, even if it's as a back up option..

Is there a big part in his game i'm missing, or is just because it's not been done in the prem yet.

He will be in the England squad once he has proved himself in the Premier League which I am sure he will do.

Who was the last English player to win a cap without playing at all at the top level? It must have come at a time when there were few other options.

I, for one, am glad for him to have a good break this summer.

We end up with a back three when Leif bombs on and Morsy is Davis's cover, not Burgess or whoever is the LCB.

Luongo tends to be the left sided CM in our system so I'd imagine it's him covering rather than Morsy but if that is the intention, it doesn't often work out. It's certainly an area we need to give more thought to next season as better teams will exploit it.

Er, because they’ve got players like Walker, Shaw and Trippier. With the best will in the world, he’s not at that level yet.

Errr, right back, right back and injured.

Other than that, you make an excellent point.

Because he’s spent the last 2 seasons in L1 and the Championship. No doubt he’s done very well but there wasn’t a cat in hells chance he was getting in the England squad, and rightly so.

Picking anyone from outside the top flight for a major tournament has been vanishingly rare since Steve Bull.

And Southgate is, let's say, at the more conservative end of things.

The weaknesses at defending you cite have been mentioned by ex-pros as well, Terry and Russell on Life's a Pitch TV, for example. How much the advanced nature of his role impacts upon that, I'm not sure.

Will be interesting to see how he does in the Premier League and whether England caps follow from there. He is - arguably - the only member of the squad who might have got a Premier League move this summer had we not gone up.

I think this is a perfectly fair point. I love him and voted for him to be POTY on our esteemed TWTD poll, but I don't think Davis has yet proven that the defensive aspects of his game are international class. He's pretty young still, will keep on improving, and I will be delighted if he's still in a Town shirt in August. I'm rather glad his qualities will not be advertised on a European stage over the summer.

Southgate’s played Tripper at left back numerous times. He started there when we beat Croatia at the last Euros.

Shaw is an out and out left back.

Nope. Morsy left, Luongo right is the typical line up.

We happily shuffle and tighten to a back three and sometimes even a back two when Clarke goes as well. If that happens then you'll find Morsy sitting in front ofcthe back two typically.

It's a way more fluid system than people think. A lot of licence not just for Davis but also for Clarke to get forward

The difference between the left and right is the Burns hugs the line allowing Clarke to underlay, whereas Broady drops 10 to 15 yards inside supporting Chaplin and Hirst and leaving the space for Davis exploit wide.

Morsy provides that left side cover but obviously Davis tracks back quickly when needed.

Ade Akinbiyi couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo...

Luongo is absolutely on the left hand side the majority of the time.

I go to every home game and pretty sure Luongo is nominally on the left of the midfield two. They switch as and when needed, but Luongo is usually on the left linking play with Davis and Broadhead with Morsy being more on the right (hence some of his delicious crossfield balls to Davis and tight interplay with Woolf and Clarke). It may be when defending that Morsy drops in behind but not sure I fully recognise your description of our shape. We certainly do go to a three at the back at times but Davis is still the left wing back and covering that space behind him mainly falls to Burgess as our LCB.

Yes, that’s spot on.

When we’re attacking through Leif Massimo covers behind him on the left.

When we’re defending, Morsy is sometimes on the left, but mostly on the right.

There’s a cool video a guy made on how we play and why we’re so difficult to play against. He made that exact point that Luongo is on the left helping and covering Leif. A pretty good heat map of Luongo’s positioning demonstrated it.

Happy to be proved wrong about who's left and right. The wider point remains that it's the left sided CDM (be it Morsy or Luongo) that covers for Davis.

He’s a right back that can play left back, Shaw is injured, Walker is a right back, Chilwell not selected, there was potentially a spot for him…. I think that was the wider point.

I actually think it's neither

Burgess or whoever is the LCB comes across, wolfy/clarke/tuenzebe etc shift across. Morsy would take his position infront of the back four and luongo would assist, I don't think we tend to see either of the CM's drop into the left slot directly.

Understand what you’re saying.

Just passed midnight here in Thailand but in the morning I’ll try to find that vid. Not to prove a point, it’s a really good video. It was even mentioned on the Brighton fans forum and it turned a lot of their fans towards McK because it shows how flexible and exciting we are going forward.

He was playing in the Championship. He hasn't yet played in the Premier League for us, so no chance of being picked.(unless we have a mountain of injuries pre tournament)

I think it's more im surprised he's not gone even as cover even if it's cover for a trippier who can play either side..

Was it Walcott that went to one of the tournaments but never got a game? and he hadn't played a prem game at that point either. ( not comparing players or positions )

No idea if they’re injured, but they’re in the squad I think. I haven’t looked to see if there are any other LBs except Shaw, yet my point stands that there are better players who’ve been playing at a higher level. Maybe if Leif has a good season he’ll get a chance.
