What's your 'voice' for phoning in sick at work 21:26 - Jun 2 with 3025 viewsgainsboroughblue

Not feeling too chipper today.

I'm sure I'll be alright and I'll plough on anyway but it got me thinking, how do you actually call in sick?

Do you do that pathetic croaky voice? Go a little quiet? Put a handkerchief over the phone to muffle the sound a bit? Is there this need to justify your absence in order to convince them you are genuine?

I've always had this feeling as soon as they hang up, they go 'yeah, right'.

Lie on the bed, on your back, with your head hanging over the edge. Then make the call.

My former secretary, at her retirement party, happily admitted she’d pulled this trick on me a few times.

Option 2, use the Jon Walters approach and send the boss a photo of some vomit in the toilet.

It’s easy to overthink these things. Realistically the person you’re calling in sick too doesn’t really care.

Probably a Slack message but I haven't called in sick for years. I work from home so the bar for calling in sick is pretty high.

Truly impaired.

Pro tip: call in sick on your mobile whilst hanging your head to of the bed essentially upside down.
For bonus points, do it around 4AM if you work for a 24/7 employer. Set an alarm and do it straight away. You *will* sound genuinely awful, because you've woken up suddenly at 4.

Serious point: balls to people who make you feel bad for phoning in sick and 'just man up and come in' culture. Coming in with bugs will guarantee that not only do YOU not perform well, but the rest of your team will be rubbish for at least the next fortnight because you've given your germs to everyone else.

I’d not speak a word before the call, no way, no food. Call within 1 min of waking up. That way your voice is nice and crispy.

But if I'm not well enough to work, why would I be well enough to speak? Or is it some test an employer thinks is justified to make sick workers pass? I just send an email/text/teams at 5am "im ill and not able to work today, i will contact you on xxx and update you" and that is it done.

Depends which illness you have / are faking...

Anything involving a sore throat, you can save yourself from having to do the voice thing by texting and saying its's too painful to talk at the moment.

Anything involving an upset stomach, I'd ring up and talk much quicker than usual (just to emphasise you're in a rush to get somewhere...)

Been pretty much self-employed for over 20 years, so I do miss having sick days!

Email's the way.

Your voice is on your mnd when you phone in, even if it's genuine. You don't want to sound too well or to fake. to the point that just talking normally is an effort as you are thinking about it when you otherwise wouldnt.

Funnily enough I had to emal in sick on Friday. Didn't know it at the time but I had Covid.

When I was in the Civil Service, they outsourced that all to some poor sod in a 3rd party call centre

The boredom (for them) in their voice as they worked their way through a decision tree which made absolutely no sense for the thing you were ringing up about half the time.

I find it unnecessary personally to jump through the phoning in hoops. I've just never worked anywhere where anything other than a phone call is considered an acceptable way of calling in sick. As long as you communicate in some way and get that information across, it shouldn't matter.

I work from home as a mental health outreach worker and get told I have to phone any customers I was due to see that day to cancel. That's something like 6 or 7 phone calls some days.

Thanks for your work in that role. It sounds unfair to you and to the people you support that your employer expects that when you are too unwell to call people... they insist you call people... and those people are needing you to be well and supportive.. I've worked similar and the expectation was that my calendar would be contacted and made aware I was unwell.

There's been a general slackening of protocols over the last decade, this behaviour more explicit following covid.

Does anyone, ever phone in sick & say that they have a heavy cold & aren't coming in?
I guess not, most say they have a "touch of flu", as if not coming in with a cold is a bit wimpy. If someone has the flu, they are likely to be ill for several days.

Indeed. My only responsibility should be contacting my employer and they should do the rest.

I just want to tell them I'm not coming in and roll over and fall back to sleep, not sitting on the phone for half an hour getting an array of responses when I say that I won't be coming to see them that day, including guilt trips and in some cases abuse that makes me feel even worse.

It's Email at our place. Or Zoom/Teams message. We got rid of phones and very few people now feel comfortable using the Zoom phone option, so it's pretty much all email comms now. Hundreds and hundreds of emails.

Pah. Man up FFS. I bet you're the sort of lightweight that wants 'breaks' too. And probably complains about having to work a short 18 hour day.
