What would you do? Fight or not? 16:01 - Jun 6 with 11014 viewsvictorywilhappen

https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/06/mobilisation-squads-face-h

The reality is there are not enough troops and more weapons need Soldiers not
deserters, objectors or those who want to make money abroad rather than fight.

The war is still being fought by middle-aged men in the main. The Infantry was in the past a young man's game. Hence Infant-try. The young abroad and being protected. Others are sitting cafes in Kiev, others are fighting on the frontline.

What will happen?

The younger generations are not cut out for war.

I very much include myself in that at 36 years old.

I would be crying and wanting to phone my mum after ten minutes.

There are as many jobs in the military as there are as a civilian. You could be the in the propaganda or scrambled eggs regiment- Major J2.

The SAS still has a regiment called The Artists Riffles- war takes creativity and guts. A good eye and good use of camo paint are also important.

I’m guessing that the only people who are really cut out for war are the type of people that most armies wouldn’t want in their ranks.

I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near to a war zone - but this kind of thinking reminds me of the famous WW1 poster ‘Daddy, what did you do in the Great War? Possibly the shame of not doing your bit will have a great impact on someone’s psyche much later.

But I wouldn’t want to fight.

So who’s going to protect you and your family if god forbid push comes to shove and your not going to fight? You really can’t enjoy the freedoms won by those servicemen if you can’t want to defend them. Even now at 68 I would pick up a weapon again if I had too!

Is it even a realistic scenario now that there could be a war requiring mass mobilisation, conscription, boots on the ground? Surely technology - and unfortunately very scarily powerful weapons - have just about rendered traditional battlefield combat between armies of soldiers obsolete? At least in the developed world.

Actually worth pointing out that despite a much larger population than Ukrain, Russia doesn’t have easy access to vastly more manpower.

- They’ve rushed untrained personnel to the front line with (as confirmed by families of the deceased) as little as two weeks training. There is little value to be gained tactically from sending ‘cannon fodder to the front line’.

- Mercenaries got fed up of being politically expendable and packed up to assist with coups in Africa instead.

- perhaps most pertinently, Putin’s recruitment for new infantry has been restricted to prisons and rural areas. That source is only finite. The reason he’s done this is ‘out of sight, out of mind’. If he starts having to recruit from the major metropolitan areas like St Petersburg, and Moscow, he’s likely to see support for his war dwindle rapidly. If educated youngsters start getting called up he could face significant backlash and protests, especially when they fail to return home.

Both sides are facing a slow attritional battle which is almost certainly going to end with a frozen conflict (as per Korea). How lasting peace will be enforced is anyone’s guess. The West have to stay strong though, they have much deeper pockets. Putin is increasing his influence in Western aligned Georgia as well.

It's a very difficult situation.

Of course Ukraine want to stop Putin and his aggression but forcefully calling up people is pretty much what Putin is doing in Russia to keep the offensive ongoing. One doesn't want to turn into who they despise in order to defeat them.

Eventually Putin's willingness to forcefully conscript from the countryside where there is less push-back will mean he probably gets what he wants.

I don't have the answers unfortunately.

Nearly half a million dead or disabled at a rough guess..in this conflict..but no one is giving true numbers on either side. All human lives. All someones son/daughter what ever side. It's generally the poor that get culled.

The Korea war stalemate ended up with both counties on their original borders! Can we expect Ukraine to give up its land and people to pootin?
Don’t forget the pootin has signed and agreed I think three treaties with Ukraine and each time promised peace ! He has gone back on those treaties every time, what’s makes anybody think he will keep his word on anther one?

Which is what people said about the interwar generation, the kids of the 1910s and '20s. Yet they stepped up to fight a war equally as brutal as that their fathers had served in.

People are remarkably resourceful in emergencies.

Yes, the answer is to do as my father did, when did his National Service; join the Royal Army Service Corps.

He ended up behind a desk, based in Singapore, had a wonderful time (with some great photos of him sunbathing on the beach) and missed all that nasty fighting in Malaysia.

And my father-in-law was in the Pay Corps, and avoided any fighting in Korea.

They are, as long as you don’t count me as one of them. I’d run a mile. I’m not going to fight because our (very privileged) leaders have failed at diplomacy. There should be plenty of mechanisms to exert pressure on Russia, through both individual states and multi-lateral initiatives like the UN. Why should us plebs be killed for the egos of a nutter that the international community won’t tackle?

That makes no sense, you've swallowed the Putin propaganda.

There were previously nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the agreed to give them up if the US and Russia agreed to defend them if required so that's a non-starter argument (and unfortunately neither side kept their side of the bargain). The location of nukes nowadays is also almost irrelevant - it's incredibly hard to intercept a ballistic missile and any launch would be picked up immediately so travel time preventing retaliation is also irrelevant - it's not the 1970s.

Ukraine were not a NATO member and weren't really on the list to become one. The Russian invasion has actually brought NATO closer to their borders with the admission of Finland so proximity of NATO isn't a good argument.

What has actually happens is during Covid Putin spent ages looking at old maps and decided he quite liked the look of the maps with Ukraine as part of Russia. Since then he's launched an invasion which has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties and destroyed large parts of a country who hadn't actually threatened Russia.

So it's really not a great look that you're trying to excuse the actions of Russia in this case.

People are saying they would not want to fight, not that they wouldn't.

I would fight for my family/country but I would find it a living hell and unlike some, really don't see war as some romantic glorious adventure.

I would rather those in charge do more to try and avoid wars rather than do more to get more people to fight wars.

Call me woke, but someone's life is in their own hands, if people choose to make money abroad and they're not abandoning their families, then not a single person in the world has the right to tell them they're wrong.

I live my life for me, not the government and not a romantic view of sovereignty. Would I fight if there was no other choice, well... if my life depended on it I would give it a go - but I really don't get my rocks off on the idea of slotting other young men and women who have also been governed by weirdos who have it way too easy.

Unfortunately mobilisation wouldn't happen. As soon as Russia is on EU country doorstep. Then everything will be in the sky or threat of Nuclear warfare. Cyber war too to impact on countries as well.

On the face of it, looks like a rather sexist policy - why aren’t women being recruited?

I abhor war, but wouldn’t hesitate to sign up if my country was being invaded. I’d have picked up a rifle in my younger & fitter days, but even now in my 70s, I’m pretty sure there’s something I could do, like logistics, writing propaganda etc.

But when it comes to booby trapping to outwit people who shouldn't be trying to invade and deprive those who live there of self-determination...
