I'm not a massive fan of Chilwell but he's a better option than simply sticking Gomez or Trippier in there, it's pretty damning for the other English left backs out there | |

Hopefully we grow into the tournament and find something. We have done in the past with Southgate. That said, I find him tactically very one dimensional. Having never really managed at club level, I do worry about his ability to observe when the game changes and what to do.
Our (recent) years of hurt can be broken down to tactical inflexibility. Ultimately picking the best players and expecting them to win on grass rarely works. |  |

He will have put his name on the radar but still has a way to go to prove that he is international quality. They were never going to take a Championship LB to the Euros.

Trippier at left back plays like Alan Judge used to play right wing; doesn't have a left foot, so always cutting back. It's so easy to defend against for any competent defender. |  | | |

He should have taken another, proper, left back. I never understand why managers do this.
Even if a player like the two you mention is not up to the highest of levels, somebody playing in their natural position will always be a better than asking a player to ‘do a job’ - putting a round peg in a square hole.
Maybe I’m being harsh because tbh, I don’t really rate Southgate. |  | | |
