With The Eagles performing their last ever concerts in the UK this week (although we heard that before) it got me thinking about the best, most instantly recognisable opening bars to songs.
Hotel California has to be up there.
Teenage Kicks maybe?
Others?

The openings to No More Heroes, Something Better Change, (Get a) Grip (On Yourself) and Hanging Around (with a unique combination of driving guitar, drum and synthesiser) take some beating.
When I took major exams in the early 80s. I played the intros on a Sony Walkman just before the exams to psyche me up.

I'm seeing The Stranglers tonight in Caldicot Castle (or what remains of them).
Hopefully all these songs will be on the setlist. As it's a 50th anniversary tour, I expect there is a good chance.
Peaches could also be added as a great intro.

Bit more obscure, but the opening to ‘Don’t Bring Harry’ is ominously beautiful.
Three down….just two more to go..(WhatsApp Group, July 2025)
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
When it comes to deliberately chaotic introductions, nothing beats this. As someone said on Youtube "Their music always sounded as if it was about to fall apart at any second. Takes a lot of skill to play like that. They were brilliant."
EDIT: Malcolm McClaren managed them in 1975 just before their demise, and took from them their chaos, proto-punk sound and attitude, as well as Richard Hell's spikey haircut and torn T-shirt with safety pins, when forming the Sex Pistols and influencing punk clothing and attitudes.

Can't believe no one's mentioned this? Gotta be one of the best/most recognisable intros.
I had to play that for my Grade 1 guitar exam. Hate it now! The reason being I recorded it about 20 times because my guitar teacher (an old TWTD poster actually) kept saying it wasn't good enough to submit to get a distinction
