Just found out Lola by The Kinks is about a bloke dressed as a woman

Yes I was going to say you’ve lived a sheltered life on the Lola one Keno.
Donovan’s mellow yellow is going to blow your mind if that’s the case.

Yeah but I’m very pure and innocent

Pure in the sense of a crucial product in tanneries in Victorian England?

That song didn't quite make it to number 68 in the US charts.

The La's There she goes again.
I liked the guitar intro to the song.
It was said to be about main-lining heroin but the band denied it.
This bit though made me think definitely, maybe.
"There she goes again... racing through my brain... pulsing through my vein... no one else can heal my pain"

I was going to say the same. I'm pretty sure Lee Mavers initially said it was about heroin but then backtracked a few years after. Great song, probably one of the best pure guitar pop songs of all time.

On a similar theme - Violator by Depeche Mode was released when I was a naive 15 year old. One of my favourite songs on the album was the last track 'Clean'. It was a good 4-5 years after it was released before I realised it was about coming off drugs and not a song about personal hygiene.

For years I thought Ralph Reader’s “singing a song on the crest of a wave” Was “Banging a gong on the chest of a slave”. But I was quite young. Got it right in my twenties…

I always thought that 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' was about lysergic acid diethylamide but it turns out it was about the paintings the kids brought home from school:

'Lennon inspired one of his father's most famous songs, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", whose lyrics describe a picture the boy had drawn, a watercolour painting of his friend, Lucy O'Donnell, from nursery school, surrounded by stars.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_Lennon

It was about 30 years after first hearing it that the subject matter of Deep Purple's Knocking at Your Back Door became evident to me.
I stopped singing it in the car with the kids.
For those who aren't aware of the tune, it's not about asking if a young lady is coming out to play.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
