'The world’s consumption of fossil fuels climbed to a record high last year, driving emissions to more than 40 gigatonnes of CO2 for the first time, according to a global energy report.
Despite a record rise in the use of renewable energy in 2023, consumption of fossil fuels continued to increase too, an annual review of world energy by the Energy Institute found.
Juliet Davenport, the president of the Energy Institute, said the report had revealed “another year of highs in our energy-hungry world” including a record high consumption of fossil fuels, which rose by 1.5% to 505 exajoules.
The findings threaten to dash hopes held by climate scientists that 2023 would be recorded as the year in which annual emissions peaked before the global fossil fuel economy begins a terminal decline.'
Terminal decline is the phrase, just not applied in the right way.
For those of us who think, "It's going to be OK, we're getting more clean energy all the time", we need to ask ourselves are we just using that as an excuse to live ever more excessive lifestyles on our children's dying planet? |  |

The more we use the 'internet' the more enery we burn. Turn off the Internet until we can produce all enery from green sources, wind/solar/nuclear/wave, and then turn it back on.

The more we use the 'internet' the more enery we burn. Turn off the Internet until we can produce all enery from green sources, wind/solar/nuclear/wave, and then turn it back on.

We also need to stop eating meat and dairy, flying all the time, and relying on cars as our primary means of transport. These things all directly cause emissions, in principle at least the internet can be powered by renewable energy sources. Things like AI and Blockchain should definitely be shut down though, they guzzle more energy in a day than you'll use browsing TWTD all year due to the processing power required. |  |

middle class people in the affluent west are consuming too much and there isn't a technological fix to that. there are things we consume - meat, air travel - which have a disproportionate impact and we need particularly to consume less. but in terms of current middle class life styles it involves us collectively becoming poorer. innovation with things like AI is going to lead us to consume more  | |

But electricity can be generated without causing significant emissions if we invest in green energy. There is no green way of producing meat and dairy currently, same with flying. Those things are massive contributors to emissions with no current green tech available to mitigate their emissions. These are the things we need to be giving up, things that directly produce carbon dioxide, methane, and other polluting gases, whilst simultaneously upping our output of green electricity. | |

The hydrological cycle will continue to be forced and we know a large flood event is going to hit the UK, the tragedy is we are in no way prepared for such an event. Only 40% of people take any action when given a red warning and speaking to an insurance expert from WTW, they stated that insurers would face capital inadequacy issues from such an event.

Im never convinced by the "we are powered by renewable energy argument". Because basically if "they" didnt exist that renewable energy could be used to offset fossil fuel powered energy.
We won't stop the internet now or AI for that matter. But it's all choices isn't it? As a human race we may chose that over jet planes or eating meat, but someone else may say they could live without the internet but need to eat a cow or two. | |

Other than multi-billionaire Bill Gates once rambling on about Kaya identity and lowering middle class living standards "a bit", I don't see anyone in conferences, workshops, etc. talking at such a scale, we work on a systems wide approach. You must understand power-laws, right?
