I don't see us going for a championship cb when we already have wolfy. Burgess and edmundson and Axel. Plus the likes of Baggott to come through. If any cb Is signed I'd imagine it'll be one with premiership experience to add known quality and experience to the backline not potential.

What makes you think that all the players that you mention will be with us next season?

I’m pretty sure the defence is going to be strengthened, and one or two of those players might well be moved on.

Can we just go for it and get greaves then for the now and future potential and rodon for that experience and international football. To go with Johnson. That's backline sorted.

Depends on money, we aren’t going to be spending 30 million on 2 central defenders. Rodon albeit had played international football, isn’t a proven premier league player quality wise, he’s played more Championship football than premier league football for example.

He’s played 15 games for Spurs and around the same for Rennes, so we aren’t talking about bundles of more experience than Greaves, pretty minimal tbh.

Can someone let me know what I'm missing. Greaves didn't stand out to me when we played them, which I guess is fair as I was somewhat distracted in the 3-3 game, and we put 6 past them across the two games. What qualities does he bring? How much better, if at all, do people think he is that what we already have?

Take a look at the numbers, and consider he’s left sided.

On paper he’s better than Burgess for most metrics, including aerial (and I consider Burgess to be immense in the air!)

Plus he’s played in a team that finished outside the top 6.

He’s a quality player.

I also noticed whilst watching his highlights video how well he actually carries the ball out of defence. Something that Burgess doesnt do often, if at all.

Thats said, Burgess has been immense. I will be sad to see when he isnt a starter but it will be a sign of our progress and improvement.

Agreed pace is a simple point to point measure. Reaction speed in terms of speed of turn, ability to just put a block in etc is equally importantly. Maybe agility is a better term along with decision making.

However we need to upgrade on all these qualities with no offense to our current squad.

Completely agree.

Omari being a great example. He isn't a physical specimen, nor is he insanely fast in terms of straight line speed like a Wes Burns. But he is insanely agile, great balance. Think Mckenna referenced his low centre of gravity and reactions when he spoke about his defensive work.

Also think someone like Ogbene who is at Luton is a good example. On paper he isn't a premier league football in terms technical ability yet. But he managed to impose himself on premier league games with elite athletic traits. Speed, Stamina, strength.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?
