Just stop a sec and have a think about this 22:53 - Jun 28 with 5176 viewsghostofescobar

We, Ipswich Town, are just about to sign a player for £20mill. £20mill. Bloody hell, that seems a lot of money. Our biggest signing last close season was £1.5mill. Wonder how many seasons up to now it has taken us to cumulatively spend £20mill. These are the days.

As a child of the 70’s it’s all a bit hard to get my head around, and slightly scary!

I know it’s what we need to do if we’re to compete this season, but this is new territory for us.
Just got to trust in the fact that we’re better run now than we have been for a very long time.

Trying to research Norwich's record fee and it seems to only be £9.1m for Steven Naismith 8 years ago. No wonder they got relegated every time, the cheapskates.

I remember when they paid like 10 million euros for the Wolfswinkel! I thought it was such a lot of money, and worried that he would be the next big thing!

It's incredible to be celebrating a new £20m signing, AND know that he's gonna fit with the system, manager, players, town and fans! Incredible...

Van Wolfswinkel coat 10 million plus 2 million in add ons... I mean they wouldn't have been triggered, as he was shockingly bad

Some people desperate to blow their load on the price tag rather than the player. Price tag is irrelevant unless it puts us in financial difficulty, it's all about the player's ability and their ceiling.

Not far off what they paid Evans for the whole club.
I wonder what he’s thinking about his tenure now, been well and truly shown how to run a football club.

Yeah it's mad, but this is the Premier League and I reckon Hutchinson is an investment. He could easily be worth double what we paid in 12 months if we / he have a decent season.

Madder, still, that we were spending 4million plus over 20 years ago on Sereni and Herman. Weirdly those amounts in hindsight look actually more crazy than us spending 20mill now

I thought Hermann was a good signing, not least because appeared to ‘fit’ with the other lads. Sereni looked all wrong from the off.

I don’t disagree with the OP. It is all slightly scary. The club is in a different world. However, the upside of those numbers is that having seen Hutchinson for a year we know all about him player wise and barring injury, he’s the nearest thing to a sure fire bet or no brainer, transfer wise, I’ve seen in a very long time.

I’ve no idea what the transfer budget is, FFP limits etc, but I’d imagine the fees for other signings will be closer to what we are used to.

I still struggle to see how a successful entrepreneur got it so wrong on multiple occasions. Like not learning each time the next strategic mistake was made, not observing how other clubs at the time were getting it right Soton, Bournemouth, Fulham, Nodge, much later probably was Brentford. Basically being knocked over time after time as wake up calls kept coming but continuing to walk towards a massive cliff edge and then purposefully stepping over the edge plunging to L1.

Quite a canny signing too… how many shirts will be sold with “HUTCHINSON” on the back - that’s going to bring in quite a few quid - 10 letters!!

If I had a Town supporting kid I'd buy him a Kevin Bru shirt... and hope we sign Perry Ng.

I don't think the majority of successful businessman are anything like as clever as people give them credit for. They are very driven and resilient but there's usually a lot of failures and then 1, maybe 2 big successes.

I was so excited when we went big with Serena and Finidi.

The we got relegated and then I noticed that many big club - big player signings often go wrong.
The big 6 ( whatever number that is now ) do it frequently.
The spaffing of Premier money on big names / small names / unknowns is real.

But we know Hutch so I'm not worried about this one.

We didn't have Serena, I think you're thinking of Venus.

Successful entrepreneurs are usually oustanding salespeople with a high degree of nerve to pull off risky deals. Not particularly experts in the area of business (they hire people for that).

Which can - and frequently does - go badly wrong if they misjudge risk or get caught out by circumstances*. One success doesn't automatically mean others will follow.

e.g. Alan Sugar: Brilliant hit with Amstrad, since then only bits and pieces. Which is why he's doing TV shows and active in the House of Lords.

* This is where I think Evans fell down. He thought getting promoted would be easier than it was, but instead poor choices, inflation and sheer chance (injuries, loss of form) meant he blew through his earmarked budget while actually going backwards. But you can't just cut losses and close down a football club in the way you might a failing business. It's not an easy problem to offload, if you've run out of ideas.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Shockingly bad for Norwich, everywhere else he played he banged in the goals. That's what makes it all the more sweet.
