It's the Sun wot won it. on 15:38 - Jul 3 with 1788 views | Zx1988 | Interesting to see that the front page doesn't nail any particular colours to the mast, and that it's only the associated article (on Page 10, no less) that explicitly states support for Labour. Rather a case of damning them with faint praise, though. To precis their thought process: Tories - exhausted, need a period in opposition Reform - one-man band, won't get enough MPs to make a difference Lib Dems - a joke Labour - plenty of concerns but have won the right to try [Post edited 3 Jul 2024 15:39]

Perhaps they couldn't bring themselves to annoy some of their readers by being clearer.

They're endorsing Labour by aping their style and not really committing to anything.

Actually it's a bit more complicated than that if this from the Guardian is anything to go by. This may also explain why they waited so long. There was reportedly much agonising within Sun HQ before it finally came off the fence and took a side. Although it always likes to back the winner in general elections, some key figures at the paper are strongly opposed to Labour and News UK, the Rupert Murdoch company that publishes the Sun and the Times, is run by Rebekah Brooks, who was charged with phone-hacking offences when Keir Starmer was head of the Crown Prosecution Service. After a trial, she was cleared of all charges.

Murdoch endorsing Labour with all the enthusiasm of a hostage proof of life video.

That does seem to be the tenor of their rationale - they'd be backing Reform if they actually stood a chance.

It's the Sun wot won it. on 16:08 - Jul 3 with 1398 views | BloomBlue | You have to remember the The Sun doesn't back political parties to try get who they want in, Murdoch holds on until he can see who is going to win and then picks them. Its entirely aimed at Murdoch trying to control the party once in power, ie we supported you, so you need to do what I (Murdoch) wants.

They like to kid themselves that it's the sun what won it, and back the most likely winner at the last moment. [Post edited 3 Jul 2024 16:15]

That is generally true, but the headline comes from 1992 and I think there is a case for saying that the right wing press and especially the Sun played a big part in the unexpected victory of John Major. [Post edited 3 Jul 2024 16:21]

It's the Sun wot won it. on 16:38 - Jul 3 with 1141 views | Zx1988 | It almost feels deliberately vague, so as to give them a degree of plausible deniability further down the line. Anyone looking at this front page further down the line would have no idea who they'd decided to support.

Yes - there can be no other reason for the Murdoch press, who have attacked Labour for years, to offer up lukewarm endorsement at the last moment. It's like John O'Farrell said today when Argentina declared war on Nazi Germany in 1945. [Post edited 3 Jul 2024 17:57]
