Are the people at polling station allowed to say candidate suspended? 15:08 - Jul 4 with 5136 views | itfcjoe | I voted earlier in CS&NI where Kevin Craig is suspended and nothing was said to me My wife has just voted and the person giving the forms out is now telling people they can’t vote for him even if on the ballot as he is suspended? That can’t be right surely?

No issues there. Though I'd need to check, stating a candidate is suspended may not be a breach in itself.

Disagree, and that's without the part where Joe says she was told she couldn't vote for him.

Yes, but not everyone that the poll staff say the opposite to is going to understand that.

Hmm. On reflection, you may be right. I was thinking that merely 'informing' the public of the status of a candidate wouldn't be an issue in itself. I'd need to read up.

I agree, just confirming they shouldn’t be saying you can’t vote for x.

How do I do this? I’ve just mentioned it in party WhatsApp group and think they’ll raise it. But she spoke at school gates and someone else was told the same re him being suspended

They are suspended from their party, not from the election. If it has been done at more than one polling station might be grounds to appeal the outcome.

The declaration of the election states that Arthur Charvonia is the acting Returning Officer. His PA's contact details are here: https://www.babergh.gov.uk/w/chief-executive-senior-leadership-team Otherwise perhaps contact Babergh's electoral services department directly?

If it were true, and we were supposed to be told, there would have been a sign posted to that effect I would think. Bit strange.

Nobody said anything to me when I went there at 8am this morning to vote either, at the same polling station I've just clarified with her, and she said when she was given the card she was told that the Labour candidate is suspended, and everyone in Q was told this (as was another Mum she spoke to at school gates). When the lady in Q behind her asked 'who does she vote for then' the lady with forms listed all the other candidates out for her [Post edited 4 Jul 2024 15:42]

Polling station clerks shouldn't get involved in any kind of party issues. This case is unusually nuanced, but - I've discussed with with journalist colleagues - the clerk isn't there to give advice on any procedural matter concerning any party.

Sounds like, potentially, a right-leaning polling clerk getting ideas above their station.

I would ask to speak to the Acting Returning Officer by doing as suggested. He will also have a deputy. This from the Electoral Commission website explains the role. "At a UK Parliamentary election in England and Wales, the Returning Officer (RO) is a l"argely ceremonial position. Most duties of the RO are discharged by the (Acting) Returning Officer ((A)RO) who is normally a senior officer of the local authority." No doubt those in the local authority responsible for the election will be very busy, so it is possible you may struggle to reach someone. If that is the case, you could try going to the place where the count is held. You could also try contacting the candidate. You should point out the polling station where this is taking place because maybe it is a one-off, but this could be grounds for the candidate appealing the result because he is on the ballot paper, although I imagine he would do so without Labour Party support. Are the people at polling station allowed to say candidate suspended? on 15:46 - Jul 4 with 2873 views | Raffles | I've established that the proper procedure is that the polling clerk gives questioning voters the number of the Labour Party and invites them to check it out for themselves.

Anyone there in an official capacity would normally be outside the building. Anyone by the gate is probably a teller for one of the parties. If you report it the returning officer should have them removed.

Are the people at polling station allowed to say candidate suspended? on 15:55 - Jul 4 with 2718 views | Raffles | The recommendation is to call Mid Suffolk on 0300 123 4000 (Option 7). The authorized statement from the polling station is: "Candidate Kevin Craig was validly nominated as an authorised candidate of the Labour party, so is included as that on the ballot paper."

I reckon it is as it’s influencing voters.

Absolutely it is - it is dissuading someone to vote for the candidate they might otherwise have voted for. There's no way the clerk at the polling station should be saying something like that.
