This election was no where near as dirty/nasty as I feared it might be 10:50 - Jul 5 with 1697 viewsDubtractor

Given the tone of debate in recent years, and the rise of disinformation on social media, I feared a really unpleasant election campaign, but it was actually all refreshingly tame in the end wasn't it?

Obviously there was some nonsense, but nothing of the scale that a lot of people feared.

I think Rishi calling the election early kind of caught a lot of people off guard in the old proper gander machine.

ha. That's more like it.

Though, for the record, I don't wear sandals.

true. but i do find it worrying that we now have 4 what are effectively single issue / broadly religion based independents. that could be divisive in the longer term.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Tho as we've seen before, single-issue MPs don't often outlive their currency (even en masse, as with the Red Wall, 2019 and now).

Yeah I thought it would be far worse to be honest. For my sins I listen to LBC quite a lot, and it did make me laugh the number of callers who were certain that Starmer is secretly a far left socialist and that the "Corbynitas" would take control of the party as soon as Labour won the election. I expected far more of that from Tory candidates, but it was almost as though they couldn't even be bothered to try.

Sadly this isn’t true for some women stating against pro Palestinian candidates.

If you read papers like the Telegraph (as I did) it was full-on dirty tricks on a daily basis, but none of it cut through especially because of gamblegate and D-Daygate.

Agreed. Not for the first time, these peace loving individuals love a bit of violence and aggression.

Dreadful and she doesn't deserve to be subjected to that. People should really be taking this very seriously, especially following the murders of Jo Cox and David Amess.

About the best attack line seemed to be that Sir K Starmer was partial to Friday Night Dinner

To make it worse, Philips even resigned her shadow ministerial role over the Labour stance on Gaza.

The concession speeches were in sharp contrast to Trump.

I think a lot of credit should go to both Starmer and Sunak for this. Starmer's acceptance speech and expressed intention to bring decency, respect and integrity into governance are very encouraging. Let's hope there is a much better standard of politics ahead for the foreseeable future. However, it would only take a few changes for it to return to the fore.
