Back in 81 when UK was on fire, Ipswich was a fag paper from going off. Not like this isolated reported stuff but potential carnage Electric House was packed and shakey. A minor thing happened where the toilets used to be but then it all seemed to dissipate. That was the night Luton went up. Crazy days. Every morning on the news there was reports of rioting and looting in big towns and citys. Brixton, Tottenham, Wood Green etc were a given. Then it went to Moss Side, Handsworth, St Pauls, Toxteth Eventually it went to smaller places like Luton, Coventry etc etc One thing I've noticed, despite being as hard as feck they don't tend to riot in the North East. I went with a bird in Toxteth in 83 and the place was a blooming disaster area.

Didn’t Private Eye run with a “Red Sky At Night, Brixton’s alight” front cover in 81. Spontaneous disorder is fascinating, the way normal people suddenly decide to set a bus on fire or turn cars over. Mental really. Going back to 81 was there one thing that triggered it or was it just high unemployment no future UK and people thinking fk it. (And yes good point about north east now you mention it) [Post edited 18 Jul 2024 23:46]

It was a case of black oppression, especially in Brixton. There was also a lot of problems with the new SUS laws which were basically a sort of stop and search. After Brixton. Toxteth, St Pauls etc were a matter of time (hours). It really went off all over the place, the only thing that has come close to matching it was 2011......... .........but 81 was crazy because it had never really been seen before in UK. Things have obviously changed now but it was really mind boggling that such a thing was happening back then. Edit.........And to be honest, things were different then. It's complete night and day from what it is now. [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 0:05]

Tensions between black youths and police mainly. There had been an increase of 'stop and search' stemming from a house fire that killed around a dozen black people in New Cross, which I think was around the turn of the new year. This was followed by the stabbing of a black youth where it was claimed that police questioned the victim rather than getting him medical help. Brixton went up, then Handsworth I think followed. I was only 8 years old at the time but every news bulletin was fecking grim around that time. 'Ghost Town' got to number one a few weeks later. The absolute soundtrack to a miserable year. (other than what was happening at PR)

On the subject of riots in the North East, there was stuff going off in Newcastle in the September of 1991. Town played up there on a Tuesday night during that period.

Leeds looks a bit "lively" tonight.... on 00:36 - Jul 19 with 3751 views | ITFC_Forever | I can remember July 1992 when the Hartcliffe area of Bristol rioted 3 nights in a row…. My Aunt and Uncle lived in a house on the edge of the local school field and we used to stay with them quite regularly, so I knew the top shops where it happened. Apparently tensions were running high anyway between the locals and the police, when two locals stole a police motorbike and made off on it. In the ensuing chase, a police car knocked them off and killed them, so the whole place went up. Aunt and Uncle said by third night, rent-a-mobs from all over the place turned up just for a bit of old fashioned mayhem-making. And I’d go Queensway for the most likely place in Ipswich.

Poll tax related? Riots in London over that would have been around then, I think

It is interesting how organic the riots were back then before cell phones and interweb and compooters. Just a collective rage unleashed.

Reported that Social Services were attempting to take vulnerable children into care for 'safety reasons', but the family objected, joined by the neighbours and others and when Police attended they all decided to riot and the Police retreated for 5 hours. I guess the guy setting fire to the bus with his lighter in front of the cameras will get a visit soon - hopefully. Lawless scum.

I went to that game! I was working up there fitting out a Carpetright. Stayed at my mate who ran the store fits who lived in South Shields. I think there were about 50 of us tops, Kywomya scored.

Poll tax riots were 1990. I remember coming back from a Town away game and there were tons of coaches returning from London for the protests. Edit. Think it was on our way back from Plymouth as it was fairly late and definitely recall seeing lots of coaches at a service stop on the M4 [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 9:30]
