I think that is where we will have our two loanees - a couple of gnarled, experienced PL players.

Not too important. Taylor will play a big role for us this year.

Likely looking at someone like Sheaf maybe in January but I suspect it will be one loan to beef up the depth but I think we are ok in the middle.

Game are won and lost in the premier league from midfield

For me it’s the most important position (s) to get right if we want to succeed

I deliberately didn’t come up with names in my OP because I have no idea. It’s the area we are potentially very light in and need experience. We have bought defenders and attackers but no-one in between. Loans will come late in the window in the window I suspect.

You're right, we just need a Rodri type player....

Also, it's 2024. Centre mid is not the be all and end all these days. Box to Box players and heros in midfield are a special breed and it's a squad game now more than ever.

But in terms of midfielders, I wonder if we have someone, maybe with some leadership skills, maybe a bit of a legend in midfield, maybe a player who gives 8 out of 10 every game who can show some grit and some heart.

Oh wait. We already have one.

Morsy will play every game apart from the ones he is suspended for. Mass and Taylor will probably share playing time with a loanee or maybe a perm if we have funds spare. It's not a priority, it's way down the pecking order. Backup LB is on the list, a couple more attackers and then a backup CM.

Morsy + Szmodics, with Luongo and Taylor as alternates in the more attacking role.

Whilst I appreciate your sarcasm less so than I appreciate how good for us Morsy is along with Taylor and Luongo, we need extra mobility and physicality in there

Have you given any examples and your reasons why?

Yes i've named some players, reasons

1 - again, and I can't make this clearer, I DONT KNOW what our reach is.

Reasons for names
Phillips - 28, experienced, needing to prove himself, still has time on his side, available for potential loan, KM went with the risk of williams, didn't pay off, but he took the risk, so he's shown he's happy to go down that path.

Mctominay, on the for sale list, the likes of Fulham interested, obviously KM connection is my thoughts on this one.

Macguire, ill be intrigued to see where he ends up, most clubs appear well stocked in defence, especially to bring in 31 year old Macguire, again KM link reason behind the name choosing.

Again, as i've said about 4 times which you seem to fail to understand, I don't know what our reach is, so feel free to name some and the reasons why but also explain what reach we should be looking at so that names of unrealistic signings aren't used.

McTominay will be too expensive Fee + Wages.

Maguire too expensive on wages and fee.

If Morsy does his cruciate first game of the season then you’re happy with Luongo and Taylor playing for the season? With nobody on the bench except maybe a loanee?

Madness to suggest it’s not an important position to fill. We need 2 signings to replace Ball and Travis

By that logic, you want cover for 3 people in each position? You just can't cover for injuries. Squad limits and FPP dictates your squad building that so you are looking a 4 in the middle with maybe one player that plays elsewhere and can cover (i.e. Johnson, Axel maybe).

1. Morsy is a machine, fella doesn't get injured so do not jinx him. Nail him on for 35 league games.

2. Luongo and Taylor is a fine CM pairing, I would want another quality addition in the middle, either on perm or on loan so we can rotate and have finishers. 4 top quality players more than good enough.

3. Bear in mind that CM was one of the key finisher positions in most games so having 3 CMs on the left side (Morsy ain't get subbed) is the limit really.

4. Ball was our utility man and Travis barely got a game at the end of last year. It's not a desperate need. We are actually ok with what we have once we get that plus one.

100% on the opinions. We all have differing ones.

I do apologise for the sarcasm, I can be quite the bitch. But also, I am right. Morsy is a an effing beast so we don't need that much cover or spend millions in the short term.

It seems like a problem for Jan 2025 rather than now. Just need an extra body in just in case to learn but it's not a £15m job right now.

Might be a machine, but he is also a walking yellow card at times, he will be suspended this season no doubt.
Mas and Taylor would be destroyed in the prem, we need x 2 CMs possibly 1 perm and a loan.

The only Muff in Town.

We have at least 3 people who can cover every other position to some degree, not sure why you think we don’t need any more depth than a couple of 30 odd year olds and a guy who couldn’t get regular games last season. Centre mid is comfortably the area where we are the most short at present and I, like many others, are expecting 2 to come in

Gus Hamer. Yes he’s 27 (only recently) but I think is a McKenna type player. I see he’s not been in Sheff U squad for any their pre season friendlies. Maybe injured but most likely as he’ll be moving on.

Sorry to be the accuracy police here, but if Morsy does his cruciate first game of the season, then we have 2 weeks before the transfer window shuts to find cover...

Agree that we need signings in that area of the pitch anyway

I'm surprised so many think a 33 and 32 year old ( come september ) is a good combo for prem football and the other option is a midfielder who couldn't get the first team spot despite being signed for over a million in the first place In a lower league.

a niche perspective

Watching Tanner Tessmann here in the Olympics, captaining the USA.

Looks a really good player, can see why Inter want him, and why we do.

Physical profile is absolutely perfect for a holding midfielder, must be 6ft3, but really athletic mover, looks to be an enforcer as well as ability to be a ball player.

So from what I have seen - options have to be Hamer, Sheaf, Tessmann.

Hamer remains my first choice.

Id be amazed if we don't make a move for Ben Sheaf.

It is quite clear we are targeting the best English players in the championship. Sheaf is imo the best of the lot. I think he could play for a top 6 prem team and not look out of place, he is such a good player. Absolutely perfect for what we need. Im praying we sign him.
