What will you miss about ‘Banter Era’ Portman Road? 23:49 - Jul 25 with 5760 viewsMatt_Netherlands

I’m not talking about standing on milk crates in the 60s, I’m talking the last 15 years or so, before the old girl got a long overdue facelift….

A couple to get us started:

The lack of traffic and being and being able to get from the edge of town to the town centre in about 10 minutes even at 2pm on a saturday

The wheel out tunnel with the track covers

Queues for the bars / kiosks being non existent 10 minutes into half time

Being able to move seats easily if you had an idiot near you or just fancied a better view

Seagulls flying over the pitch and threatening to land

The death trap photographer pits

The stadium having about 8,000 people in ten minutes before kick off, leavjng ha wondering if it would fill up any more

Never running out of pies.

Kiosk running out of hot chocolate and other things despite Marcus Evans supposedly being a business guru genius and that tannoy announcement saying 'Marcus Evans: the intelligence behind world leading business' or something like that.

Deciding to go to an away game on the day.

Walking past St Matthew’s school and having to double check that the game is actually on as there were soo few people on Portman Road. Then spending time counting the seagulls in top of sir Alf stand.

Being able to get a ticket on the odd occasion I could make it.

And if travelling into Ipswich for other reasons, being surprised how light the traffic is given it's a match day.

That's about all.

I miss the half time games where fans kicked the ball into skips or through front doors.

I quite miss seeing Ipswich players playing for Ipswich. There was quite a flurry of young hopefuls queueing up at one stage of the peak banter era - with Teddy Bishop looking à long term shoe in at one stage.

On a similar theme I quite miss Ipswich supporters supporting Ipswich I’m pretty sure there wasn’t the embarrassing need for 20 signings every year in banter time, - although dozens of dud loans twirled in and out of the revolving door.

Being able to go and watch a match at PR.

Being able to buy a season ticket.

Realising I was spending more money and time doing something I wasn't even enjoying travelling to watch dire football.

The five point plan.

The excitement of a new manager every 12-18 months and the belief we'd get back challenging the playoffs.

Mobile phones ringing in press conferences.

Easy parking up the hill from train station. Plus being able to park on the grass verge of said road (don't miss being worried about getting the car off the wet slop on rainy days)

Being able to breathe the (burger fart) air without someone letting off a flare under my nose.

Having time to read the program during the game safe in the knowledge that we wouldn't have a shot on target until around 60mins. -). (That one is tongue in cheek by the way)

Bit earlier I know, but in the 70's & 80's being in the North Stand and seeing the large group of town fans charging across the car park behind the Sporting Farmer towards the North Stand 10 minutes before kick off, livening up the away fans and the atmosphere. Usually the Chantry, Whitton and Gainsborough boys.

The Drum & Monkey
Buying the Green Un from the Cornhill
The cherry picker, HG Wells-esq, behind Churchmans that told you we were on Match of the Day
Lambert droning on and on and on ……and on
That feeling of depression and certainty of 90 mins utter tedium when a midfield of Hyam, Skuse and Douglas was announced

Similar era, do you recall the time (I think maybe a last game if the season) where the player booted dozens and dozens of blue Mitre footballs into the crowd as a giveaway? Mine lived a long and happy life. Must’ve been late 90s or early 2000s.
