What will you miss about ‘Banter Era’ Portman Road? 23:49 - Jul 25 with 5762 viewsMatt_Netherlands

I’m not talking about standing on milk crates in the 60s, I’m talking the last 15 years or so, before the old girl got a long overdue facelift….

A couple to get us started:

The lack of traffic and being and being able to get from the edge of town to the town centre in about 10 minutes even at 2pm on a saturday

The wheel out tunnel with the track covers

Queues for the bars / kiosks being non existent 10 minutes into half time

Being able to move seats easily if you had an idiot near you or just fancied a better view

Seagulls flying over the pitch and threatening to land

The death trap photographer pits

The stadium having about 8,000 people in ten minutes before kick off, leavjng ha wondering if it would fill up any more

Never running out of pies.

Resting my arm on the seat to my right.
Parking at the ground.
Being able to go to whichever away fixtures I wanted.
The old PA guy.
No electronic advertising boards.

Spontaneity. Going to a midweek game last minute because you don’t want to watch crap reality TV, then celebrating a jammy 1-0 win by going to the pub, before you go to a club because a last minute winner over Rotherham deserves a full night out. Waking up late for work with a hoarse voice and wondering if everyone can smell the whiskey and doner kebab oozing from your skin because you over-celebrated Town moving up to 14th in the league.

Oh and I miss the gallows humour about some of our players.

Nothing that is specifically attached to banter era, nothing.

Many of those points were true since the end of the Robson years with few exceptional years in between.

So I guess the sartorial mess that was Milne standing on the platform tolerating verbose drunken Town fans before escaping to first class. He was a nice guy but his hands were tied, then wrapped with duct tape by the Mafia Don.

Not being able to just turn up and walk through a turnstile and go anywhere to sit. Or before that walk all the way around the ground before choosing where to stand.

Recent times:
Walking round the football ground three times with my dad before the game
Watching Jim going bananas from the dugout and the players shifting to the other side of the pitch
Counting how many floodlight bulbs weren’t working
The decrepit corrugated stuff surrounding the old practice pitch
The progress of moss growing on roofs

Back in the day:
The St John Ambulance stretcher blokes. One little one, one big one. Didn’t pay to get injured
Standing on the terrace
Shefki’s celebration
Churchman’s sh£thouse
Those alphabet numbers they used to put half time scores under. They were usually wrong, if done at all
The little blue disabled cars (invacars, made illegal in 2003) next to the pitch at Churchmans end.

The view from lower north of the paintwork peeling on the staircase entrance to J Block middle west! Through the Evans era it would get worse every week! Team that with the puddle from the sprinkler hydrant along the west stand touch line! Years of it leaking, ball goes in, ball boy got soaked! Which brings us to ball team, the sheer lack of interest shown! A good idea was the barrier in front of the bar under J Block. Filtered people in one end, got your pre poured pint, out the other end, easy. More recently, Ewing made to fight through the north stand lower from one end to the other to get to block 4!

I already miss being able to get seats together. A few times last season I could only manage to get two in the same row, about 8 seats apart.

Can't remember who it was against but in some of that pre McKenna league 1 dross I genuinely sat and counted the number of away fans once. Can't say I'll miss it, but won't be doing that for Newcastle or United.

Mrs B and her sister used to play I Spy during the Roy Keane era as the football was so boring, They definitely won't miss that.

Bit earlier I know, but in the 70's & 80's being in the North Stand and seeing the large group of town fans charging across the car park behind the Sporting Farmer towards the North Stand 10 minutes before kick off, livening up the away fans and the atmosphere. Usually the Chantry, Whitton and Gainsborough boys.

I have to concur with what most other people are saying, the ease of getting tickets, being able to just turn up (even late) and still buy on the gate.

Perhaps, also, the very rarity of success made one savour it more.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Don't worry everyone, give it 5 years and we'll have all of that back again and the premier league circus will be but a distant memories for the fans and franchise owners alike, as they head off to pastures new.

Yours,

Nelly.

Two blokes walking on and off the pitch before kick off and at half time with an agricultural sprinkler and a length of fireman's hose, in the vain hope that one sprinkler in the centre circle might, one day, it might reach both penalty areas.

On that note, the most impressive change under Gamechanger has to be the sprinklers that appear from nowhere out of the grass and then disappear again. The sort of sorcery you don't expect at little old Ipswich.
