Central Midfield 19:51 - Jul 29 with 3388 views | Tractor_Boy333 | After being at the game Saturday I’m concerned that we are looking very thin on the ground for central midfield. We got overrun at times last season, and only going to be tougher in the Premiership. I’m a great fan of Morsy and Luongo but both wrong side of 30 and I can’t see Morsy not having a suspension or 2 next season. Mass didn’t often finish a game last season and I don’t see Taylor as filling this position. It all seams to have gone quiet on any new signings in the midfield so just wondering if there’s any rumours or links I’ve missed about new signings. It’s the one area that we really need to add too.

Perhaps but I would prefer some more experienced options.

Yes an experienced premiership player is a must. Right at the beginning of the transfer window I was really hoping we’d get Ross Barkley I think he would have been perfect but no surprise Villa signed him up quickly.

We haven’t made many mistakes under Mckeena with transfers so i would imagine there’ll be one or 2 incoming 🤞 | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I did say on occasions…but I’m worried Morsy won’t be as dominant in the prem. But I’ll be amazed if he doesn’t get one or 2 red cards. But I’ll be happily proved wrong.

James to be Morsy’s deputy and a starter to replace Mass and I think we’re set. Hackney gets a few mentions on here. Is he the Mass replacement? FWIW I don’t think starting the season with Morsy and Luongo would be a disaster, but need reinforcements before September.

Don't worry. Everyone pretends each and every game was perfect because we got promoted. When you actually look at SOME of the fixtures and the way certain teams attacked us there were some moments where our midfielders struggled. Prime examples as used before is leeds. Which tbh for me is more of a comparison to what we will face each week in the prem. And we saw it albeit in a friendly. But I mentioned it on Saturday. Luongo couldn't track his runner so we ended up with wolfy marking the wrong player and johnson ending up tucked on and a free player on the flank. Just like summerville did with leeds when our midfielders couldn't track their runners. On the ball I've no problems with either midfielder but off it.we don't have 1 CM who is mobile enough to be cope with prem players imo. Yet

While I agree that we need CMs as a priority, I don't agree that we're overstocked in the attacking midfield department - we're looking a bit thin there too and will need reinforcements.

Yes that’s exactly what I meant but perhaps you just explained it better 🤣. Leeds was a prime example. There were other games where we didn’t lose but at times the same things happened but we managed to still get a result. Perhaps last season the manger was happy to take the risk knowing rightly on most occasions we would outscore the opposition. A more mobile midfielder it what’s required but I’m struggling to think who’s available with the right experience.
Central Midfield on 09:24 - Jul 30 with 1747 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | I'd agree that we are looking very thin in midfield - especially quality wise. I do think we need an imposing box to box figure in the midfield next to Morsy - a Souza for Sheff Utd/Billing for Bournemouth type presence who can get about the pitch but physically impose themselves too. As has been the same for the last 2 seasons, if Morsy is on it, the team are on it and if he's slightly off it, then we are off it. Keeping him available and fit will be key to anything we do next season but we will have less of the ball and we do need legs in there.

The Leeds away performance was a systemic failure rather than down to individual midfield shortcomings. By pushing on so aggressively in the wide positions we left huge spaces in behind that Summerville and James were able to exploit in transition. We could have had Rice and Rodri in midfield and it wouldn't have prevented that. McKenna has got very little wrong during his tenure but his "being bold, being aggressive, being attacking" approach was a bit naive that day. I think and hope that he will have learnt a lot from that match when playing against better teams. Yes we need midfield reinforcements but the idea that Morsy in particular is not up to it is complete nonsense. Luongo will also play a part this season but probably only as a squad player.

It is complete nonsense. Good job no one said morsy in particular wasn't up to it. Is he mobile enough to be able to the job of two players. No. We need him to be able to pull the strings and 2 others who are mobile enough to do the other midfield job. Luongo for me suits high level champ sides who can control games. He's not imo suitable when teams are at us as he hasn't got the legs it seems to do two jobs. And Taylor as KM seems to agree.. isn't a cm So yes we still need 2 cms to compete for a spot alongside but to also push morsy and luongo has that sub spot for cup games imo. As always we will see.

Whilst I think we need to add to defensive midfield, I think Saturday showed we are lacking in pacey attacking players. We signed Hutchinson but he was already here and we have Burns and Davis with Harness in reserve but they were all already here. We have lost Samriento and Jackson from last season and as soon as Burns and Hutchinson were both missing we seemed to lack that threat of someone running at the opposition with pace. We really need to sign a couple more players of that mould. Also, as far as defensive midfield is concerned, Humphreys started off playing there. Is he considered merely a left back now? And Johnson can play there too can't he?
