Despite having flown over 50+ times 12:32 - Aug 2 with 6733 viewshype313

Recently I've developed an irrational fear of flying, anyone else had similar or am I just being a berk?

Or falling out of the aircraft. That’s not so good.

Aircraft are very safe tbh. It is one of the few industries that seek to learn from mistakes and problems. Aircraft are much safer and more powerful too. Well, apart from the Russian ones and the odd bit of cr@p from Boeing.

Mrs C was quite a nervous passenger when I first knew her. She’s not now and hasn’t been for years.

Was thv opposite for me - always loved flying, esp take-off - that magical moment of surge & feeling of freedom as you get airborne - and landing (exciting new place or home safe). Until first flight with ex-husband, who decided to point out that take-off & landings were the most dangerous stages of flying!

You should have taken that as a free licence to punch him in the knackers every time you took off and landed thereafter!

I have a recurring nightmare of being involved in a plane crash. Not sure if that’s a known thing, but it does take the shine off a bit!

I used to fly a lot of long haul for work and never thought anything of it. I looked forward to it. I love being on an overnight flight and seeing dusk through to dawn. Some of the most magical views I’ve seen have been from a plane - be that seeing all the glaciers draining Greenland and the bergs, dawn sunlight glinting off the Amazon, huge swathes of darkness and nothingness over the Sahara, scattered settlements on the Eurasian plains with lightning storms off in the distance, flying the length of the Himalayas, chartered helicopter and light aircraft trips around the largest peaks in the world in the Andes and Himalayas. Brilliant stuff. I envy pilots.

But yeah, a bit more nervous for some reason now I’ve stopped flying. The accidents and news of failures coming out of Boeing certainly hasn’t helped.

Not quite the same, but I used to love rollercoasters when I was younger.

Now knocking 40 with a 10 and 8 year old, riding some rickety sht-tip, made from polystyrene and 5000 year old scaffolding scares the bejaysus out of me.

That's the difference between a choldhood innocence trusting engineers and an educated adult having heard news reports and realising that you are actually sitting in a cage held together with a few bolts!

I hate fairground rides with a passion, especially high ones but used to love them as a child. My own children love making me even more scared on the odd occasion I am on them with them even as I point out there are just two bolts holding the can together and if either one fails we plummet to the ground! They just laugh and rock it all the more!

By and large, landings carry more risk than take offs. But this is minute. Aircraft (not Russian ones) are so well made and reliable. Engines in particular.

Jet engines are relatively simple and have less moving parts to fail than piston engines and since Frank Whittle (the true inventor of the jet engine as we know it) developed the first ones in the 30s and 40s they’ve got better and better.

Yes take off is the best bit. Always a buzz with that, especially if you are flying it. Ignore the ex-husband’s words. Nothing dangerous about any of it. Anyway, the people have a vested interest in getting it right and for tricky airports like Madeira you need training and a rating to land there. All good.

I just fire up Flight Radar and just look at how many flights are airborne at any one time. Boggles the mind.

Thanks

Yeah, the only time I was nervous pre-ex, was flying into Madeira twice in the 1980s before they extended the runway - felt like you were about to ditch into the sea rather than land on an actual runway!

Yes, I did Madeira airport once before the runway was extended. Got it right on the third go round. It’s a spectacular one because as you say, all you see is a heck of a lot of water..

The other one was taking off from Skiathos old airport. It could only do it with a minimal fuel load because of the mountains and would refuel at Thessaloniki. Basically the pilot held it on the brakes while giving the engines full chat, let go and off you’d go like a cork out of a bottle. It worked!

I got the chance to try and experience aerobatics a good few times. Brilliant fun and really gave an understanding of what the aeroplane was doing; how flight really works.
