Portman Road roof 18:15 - Aug 12 with 4447 viewsChrisAllen7

Does anybody know if the roof of both the West Stand and Cobold are to be painted in the refurbishment of Portman Road? I bloody love our ground, everything about it but I can't help think that it would look a million times better with the roofs painted or replaced.

Also a pressure washer on the SAR and SBR roofs too, bit green and grimey in places.

Literally was thinking that Saturday, would look slick in black when the camera is facing the Cobbold, a cheaper option until it’s demolished.
I thought the cleaning company were coming back early August to do both end roofs they said?

If the roofs are made up of asbestos sheets (not sure, but they look like they could be), I woundn't want those washed or disturbed in any way. We don't want loose asbestos or worse, asbestos dust, falling down into the stands and seats below.

Unhalfbricking

There is definitely asbestos in the Cobbold Stand, I have that on good authority. The roof certainly looks 'asbestosy', doesn't it?

Wasn't there some article a month or so back that said the roof of the North Stand was getting cleaned?

Question.

Could you not clad over them? No idea if that's a thing.

It would cost a lot of money for something that offers no real benefit other than making a few people happy with the occasional camera angle.

There are better things to spend money on. When the assumed asbestos is removed they can be re-roofed or totally rebuilt.

If you so much as disturb asbestos, it carries risk. There were many things that ITFC wanted to improve in the Cobbold over the years, but the previous stadium manager told me that as soon as you raise a hammer, so to speak, with a building containing asbestos, then you encounter all sorts of additional costs and regulations.

Given that was the Marcus Evans era, there's no surprise they didn't want to incur those costs.

Now I'm going to sounds extremely thick. I have no clue about building safety and it's regulations. But if you wanted to just paint a water proof black paint over the top of it would that be an issue? I can understand if you start hacking away at it and causing dust. But if the rain and downpours of the last 50 years haven't done any damage surely coating it in paint would be ok?

You can paint anything these days, but disturbing asbestos in anyway shape or form is a massive heath and safety no no.

You would only d anything to asbestos if it's absolutely essential, and it wouldn't be as simply as painting it as it would come with all kinds of safety certificates, specialist workers etc.

And simply "looking nicer on cameras" isn't a good enough reason.

Been saying for years that a new modern roof on the old west stand would completely transform the ground.

Have heard whispers of a new roof for the West Stand potentially being in the offing at some point, although nothing definite. Would reduce the number of restricted view seats and potentially allow the addition of some extra rows at the back.

Would also allow so much more natural light. The current roof looks so old fashioned & naff.

Cleaned 3 weeks ago as they closed the road off for 2 days to do it ……thank me later .

Needs to be done. I’ve sat up at the top a few times in the last 2 years and the poles can be very restrictive and spoils a decent view from up there.

Hopefully gets pinned from the back but maybe not a cost they want to have if it’s going to be rebuilt at some point in the mid to long term.

Only the sides and back were cleaned, the clear roof part in the stadium bowl is due to be done still

The problem with that roof is it is so cavernous and any noise generated is dissipated high up away from the pitch. So a much lower more diagonal roof would improve the atmosphere a great deal. Portman Road is already pretty noisy. If they sorted that roof it would be awesome.

IMO The West Stand is the ugliest at the ground. A new surface on the roof along with fitting a length of scaffolding similar to the two end stands would make it look much better. I am not on board with doing similar to The Cobbold stand as it probably will be replaced in the next few years.

I agree we should improve acoustics but I really, really don't want us to lose the uniqueness of Portman Road in the process. I've seen some talk about creating wraparound sections that join the corners, but - whilst I understand that would increase capacity - it would, I think, lose the soul of the place. Portman Road is historic and iconic, and long may that continue.

Change happens, it did 20 odd years ago,it will happen again, think the joining up of corners is probably a no brainer if it’s affordable and worthwhile.
