If a lino is going to give offside 17:09 - Aug 18 with 1931 views | gtsb1966 | Can someone explain to me why he can't give it straight away. I'm confused. The decision in the Chelsea/City game just now took about 30 seconds after the player was offside.
If a lino is going to give offside on 17:13 - Aug 18 with 1898 views | TheBoyBlue | My understanding - and I never understand why pundits can't get this as 'experts' - is that if they let it go they can always disallow a goal afterwards for offside. However, if they put their flag up straight away and it's not offside then that's a goalscoring opportunity gone and you can't get that back.

Thank you. Makes sense.
If a lino is going to give offside on 17:16 - Aug 18 with 1839 views | sotd78 | I assume they don't flag in case they get it wrong and then a goal is scored. But when it's clear and obvious then they really should. It's not only daft but dangerous for players to keep chasing the game with a potential injury.

And even when it looks really obvious and you're sat there thinking 'just flag' sometimes when they go back to it there's someone you haven't seen playing them onside.

If a lino is going to give offside on 17:17 - Aug 18 with 1835 views | EddyJ | Referees don't wave play on when they see a foul. Surely there is a chance they give the free kick incorrectly and deny a goal-scoring opportunity? Why are offsides special?

It's a good point, look at the Eze freekick earlier today, the ref blew his whistle before the ball hit the back of the net earlier so the ball was deemed dead and the goal couldn't stand, even if VAR had ruled there was a mistake in awarding the foul.

It makes sense up to a point, but there was one in a game yesterday (forget which one) where the offside was massively obvious and the lino didn't flag. Now what happens if they play on and someone breaks a leg before the game is stopped? The old way (play to the whistle) gives the ref the responsibility and if he's in any doubt he can play on until someone looking at the telly has a word in his shell-like.

This is the modern game where the officials are scared to make a decision in case they are crucified afterwards by 15 different camera angles. Lino flags for offside, job done. Of course there will be errors you can’t win them all. Burns managed to dodge a red card yesterday, don’t hear many ITFC fans moaning! It’s all ok as long as it favours your team.

That does actually make sense. I will stop grumbling about it from now on!

I will keep grumbling because it still annoys me. To be honest are linesmen (old skool title) redundant. I thought there was a scheme mooted to replace them with one ref in each half as refs were supposeably unable to keep up with play.

well we'll just to have to put up with that unfathomable risk as a consequence and live with it :)

Why can't the lino just tell the ref he thinks there's an offside.... ref sticks his am up so everyone knows it will be checked but everyone carries on playing to the whistle. It's a bit nfl but at least they all know when there's a "flag on the play" so to speak Personally I hate it all but we aren't going back so it's my begrudged solution
