Wes Burns going off really hurt us 13:14 - Aug 20 with 2031 viewsRIPbobby

The more I think about it the more I come to the conclusion Burns going off changed the game. Burns went off on 57 minutes with the match still 0-0. Withing 8 minutes we were 2 down. Luis Diaz seemed to go into overdrive after this and gave poor Johnson a torrid time. Before this Diaz was very quiet. So as I said in another thread having big Wes on the pitch normally takes 2 opponents out of the team to contain him. Hopefully he is back very soon.

He is just so crucial to how we play, and I'm not sure we have a replacement for him which is concerning because he has been picking up a few niggly injuries recently.

I do think KM might see Delap there. He has all the physical tools to do it, as well and being a good ball carrier and very fast. The issue for that is, we don't have anyone to cover Delap yet (but should soon).

I think we were struggling from about 50 minutes, with or without Burns. It didn't help but mainly because we didn't have players who could counter Liverpool's increased intensity.

Edit: I originally meant that we didn't have players to bring on to counter Liverpool but it works both ways that second half.

The speed at which Pool transitioned was a little frightening in that second half. Literally going from walking pace, to two passes and they had a scoring opportunity.

By that point, Burns on or off was moot.

I agree that in the past we really have missed Burns when he's not played, but had he stayed fit on the pitch i don;t think it would have made much difference on Saturday. Like Steve says, we were already on the ropes by the time he went off. Personally I was already thinking that a goal was only a matter of time. The fact that both goals came down our left suggests that the problem wasn't Burns going off.

Yep, Johnson was given the run around, but so were all our players, individually and as a team. I noticed a look in Leif's eyes at one point - it was one of 'How the heck do i keep this lot out?' We were reduced to panic in the face of a mature Liverpool machine. I hope they learn from it - if they can it;s an invaluable lesson. We might need to put into practice some of those lessons this week!

But we do have that panic mode in us - even in the Champ last year there were a small handful of games when we were hanging on for dear life, desperately hoping for the final whistle. Liverpool's quality punished us and thankfully I think they took their foot off the gas or we could have been properly mullered.

Hutch is a completely different profile and cant do the same job that Wes does on the right which allows us to transition so easily in to a back 3. Obviously he can play there, but Burns is a very specific profile.

Agree that when we have Hirst back and a new No 9 in the building that we might well see Delap sharing this role with Burns. Same strength, good ability in the air and has the touch to go past people.

Yep. And think with what we saw with how he handled Quansah, who isn't short, but not as physically strong as Konate or VVD, was also telling.

McKenna likes physically out matching full backs. Delap playing wide gives you a massive physical advantage on almost every full back in the league, giving a really good option should you go direct.

The one I remember clearly is opening day at Sunderland - we were in control and 2-0 up, they had a guy sent off but it looked like we were down to ten. We were all over the place and very lucky not to concede again. As you say, panic mode. But we grew and learned from that so fingers crossed...

I think Burns and Hutchinson are. We had Sarmiento and Jackson as back-up options previously but I can't see what we have that offers the same type of threat if one or both are missing or to replace them later in the match. I wonder if we are pursuing that type of player still. I certainly would happily see Sarmiento back again.

I don't think it's down to individuals being there or not, it was just surprising to see a McKenna team being unable to keep up with the pace of a team, I've never seen that before.

But they are arguably the second best team in the country, and we were 3/4 of a League One side just two seasons prior.

It did look a bit that way, but we were struggling before he went off and their two goals, Burns would have made no difference.
