Ivan Toney 14:26 - Sep 2 with 11340 views | BlueNomad | On a reported £400,000 per week after tax. Average crowds are 8,500 so he’s getting that for playing in front of fewer fans than he did when he played for Peterborough. Obscene.
Ivan Toney on 06:13 - Sep 3 with 1829 views | NeedhamChris | There are a lot of ideological purists here saying that he doesn't need the money, and also plenty assuming they know what his ambitions in football are. It's a job. This is happening in other areas too on a smaller scale, I know a few people from universities being paid big bucks to go to work for universities in Saudi. I'd like to think I'd say no, but in reality it wouldn't be about me. If you gave me the option to leave a much bigger amount to my family then I would take it. It's 13x his Brentford wage once you account for the tax. Crazy stuff.

Ivan Toney on 15:09 - Sep 2 by Illinoisblue | Pretty similar, actually. Importing Messi is the worst thing they can do as it makes the league some kind of Harlem globetrotters circus. They should introduce promotion and relegation but the owners are too scared to do that. |
Just to pick up on this one, if you listen to Becks talk about it, one of the main reasons for getting Messi over there was to inspire kids to pick up the game (that's working), with the goal for the USA to hopefully win the World Cup in the future. Because he knows that the septics won't buy into a sport unless they're the perceived or real best in the world at it (which is why their women's side are better supported than any other national team).

I wonder if he has gambling debts to pay off. This would be a quick way of sorting that. You look at top players like Merson going bankrupt after the millions he earned and can see it's possible. Also, if you take the zeros off and look at it like a regular job - whatever it is everyone in this thread does, if someone offered you £100 an hour to do it... and then someone else offered you £400 an hour to (technically) do exactly the same thing, which would you pick?

He also did the hard yards playing in L2 and L1. Most of his career has been at that level where he will have been earning no more than a £5k a week. He isn't somebody that has been earning £100k a week for the last decade. He's also not a truly elite player, he's a someone that has had a decent PL season and one excellent PL season. Fairly telling IMO that when push came to shove, there was no real interest from top 6 PL clubs. [Post edited 3 Sep 2024 9:51]

the debts are a possibility, and you're right everyone's circumstances are different. for me, the fact remains that if you were offering me a decent pay rise and my family were secure, i would look at job satisfaction and personal ethics over money. i know that puts me in a fortunate position compared with many. if the £400 was working for esso and £100 was greenpeace*, i'd take the £100. where do is sign up! (*i'm not equating arsenal with greenpeace!)

What do you know about Ivan Toney as a human? He's had trouble with betting, but taking a massive pay rise isn't exactly something that many would turn down.

I mean the constant belittling of Brentford whilst playing for them is enough and telling really. Aside from that he’s opted for the money over any real career. Sad really because he’s a bloody good player.

If you really think 100- 400 pounds per/month equates in any way to 100k to 400k per/month differential you have serious financial issues, and I hope your wife doesn't allow you to manage the accounts at home.

Yes. With most humans, the instinct to seek security and freedom is so strong that it can keep influencing your decisions far beyond the point where you have more than 'enough' by most normal standards.

I think we all look at football itself as the dream career, worth remembering that to some it's just a skill they have that is well-paid. I guess what I'm saying is one persons definition of a career is different to another's.

Ivan Toney on 14:43 - Sep 2 by davblue | that's mega hard to turn that down. If one of the big boys came in for him, i suspect he would have got 100k - 150k a week. He's probably not earnt great money over his career, but a decent wage and this basically sets him up for life but feels too early in his career without a guarantee that he would be able to earn that in the future. |
Toney is 28 so I can see why he's taken the money, especially as he came up via the lower leagues. Mind you, if he hasn't kicked his gambling habit, it's all a bit irrelevant what he earns, unless your name is Joe Coral.

I very much doubt a gambling addict would go to Saudi.

Don't think I am thick I have 3 degrees and won many international awards in my profession. I also don't generally repsort to personal abuse over a gentle leg pull, which is usually the retort of someone with low intelligence and social skills.

Oh right, so you saying (unprovoked) I don't understand finances and my wife must do them is a "gentle leg pull" but me saying you and Texters are a bit thick is "personal abuse"! Righty ho. Now you've got your 3 degrees maybe you should move onto Diana Ross and The Supremes.
