On a reported £400,000 per week after tax. Average crowds are 8,500 so he’s getting that for playing in front of fewer fans than he did when he played for Peterborough. Obscene.

I heard one pundit say tax free. Don't remember who.

It will be tax free, as long as he stays there for x period of time.

Henderson I believe fell foul of that when he bailed after about 6 months.

I think you are all forgetting that Ivan doesn't give a s*** about football.

Less so when the FA banned him.

£400k net is an insane amount of money, way more than anyone else earns in the EPL. For a man who isn't a massive football fan, doesn't care about trophies or any teams he plays for, he's done alright out of it and fair play to him.

You can play high and mighty all you like on the internet, not many would turn it down.
It's not just life changing, that's like 2 or 3 generations of life changing. For all we know, he could be a very charitable man as well but that's clutching.

Absolutely, he's ticked the boxes of playing in the Prem and playing for his country, now this crazy money sets up all his family and yep generations to come, friends too possibly, the list is endless, it's not just about him..

You have short changed him. It's £403,000 per week. Rumours are that he might have been given another ban for gambling if he stayed in European football. How true that is, I'm not sure, but would make sense as there is no way he should be playing in that league. He could have gone there in 3 or 4 years time, but far to much to offer at the moment.

if he's come from poverty, he might want to make sure his family are supported and give them a chance going forward. There's so many tangible things, it's not black and white.

What world do you live in where the £84k a month take home he was on at Brentford isn’t enough to get you and your whole family out of poverty?

It depends - but working in Saudi is in theory tax free for UK Expats, but I *think* you have to complete the current tax year and the whole of the following tax year to qualify, else you will be liable on return to the UK for something.

It's a bit of a moving target, the Saudi gvmt are working through a number of tax/welfare change proposals, and have been for the last few years.

Suspect his England International career is probably over too

This is what I don't understand. Southgate put him in the last tournament squad. We now have a new England manager, and he has barely scratched the surface of an international career. Did he not see this as an opportunity to stake a claim? He is 28 (peak player age), has a 1 in 3 record for Brentford in the Prem, which is even better for the fact that he is not at a top 6 team. Does he not want to further his international career and play at the top of the game in his prime? Baffling.

Over analysing the comment. What if he has a big extended family? I don’t know the ins and out but it’s his choice whatever we say.

I imagine we'll see a return to England in January or next summer to Newcastle given the Saudi links.

You'd have to be very cynical to suggest they'll loan him free to Newcastle in January. Oh.

You most certainly can. 'Buying' in talent is very much comparable!

All leagues import talent in from other countries.

Has anyone considered the lifestyle changes may also be appealing to Toney? Suadi has a much different climate and culture than the UK. Also in Suadi a top footballer are a lot less likely I would imagine to be hassled for pictures/autographs every time they go out.
Yes 100k can set up your family for life, but 400k can set up more family + friends for longer. Plus you have more surplus money to give away to good causes and help less fortunate people if that is preferred. If he was early 20's I would understand people questioning his ambition but he is 29. Also despite the low attendances the Suadi league is drawing in more and more top players, so he still gets to test himself against some top players. People carry on like he will be playing against Dave and Paul down the Dog and Duck on a sunday morning.

What are the saudis trying to achieve by spending billions on slightly past it players to waltz around in their joke of a league. I know they have more money than they know what to do with but still.

Just watching a bit of the Saudi Snooker tournament on Eurosport.

Apparently they’re matching the highest ever prize money in the history of snooker.

The place is virtually empty. Row upon row of empty seats.

One lad made a 147 last night and the only clapping was from his opponent, but he got fifty grand for it.

Every player in the top 64 has turned up to fill their boots. Winning two rounds in this tournament pays more, apparently, than reaching the semis of most of the tournaments in the UK.

I just don’t understand what Saudi is getting out of it. I’m off to research exactly what sportswashing means.

The Arab nations plan for the long term, like the Chinese. They are thinking 20 years ahead. So in 20 years, Saudi will be known for sport, and a possible destination for a holiday with some sport thrown in. The old guard like us will know their past but over time, the new generations know them as land of sport and well paid sportsmen.

Looking at your avatar I'd have thought you might have recognised it. Sportswashing is where a foreign political power (such as one of those horrific theological dictatorships in the middle east) uses its finances to insert itself into the sporting forums of other countries, seeking to buy over a fan based and convince the obviously ignorant fans to ignore the monstrous failings of their regimes and generally try to convince everyone they're really nice guys, despite the face coverings, public executions and jihadi death squads.

Have a Google of Jamāl Aḥmad Khāshqujī too.

Oh, and they are a shoe in for a World Cup given they are the only country applying for it (2034) after the 2030 world cup had some games awarded to different continents thus meaning no one from Europe or South America could host.

Not remotely dodgy at all.

Come on get real, if someone offered you ten times your weekly current salary you'd be off like a shot, can't blame the guy he can secure his family for many generations. He's not going to play for a top 4 team and won't displace Kane so fair play to him.

that's mega hard to turn that down.

If one of the big boys came in for him, i suspect he would have got 100k - 150k a week. He's probably not earnt great money over his career, but a decent wage and this basically sets him up for life but feels too early in his career without a guarantee that he would be able to earn that in the future.

It wouldn't be hard to turn that down at all.
What is the point of money anyway? It's basically to give you more freedom to choose what you want to do. There is no way that he'd prefer to play over there and lose his place in the England squad if the money were the same.
Any Premier League footballer on a 3 year contract should be set for life already.

That is my thinking. What can he do with that grotesque amount of money that he couldn't already do with the ridiculous amount of money he'd make in a proper league? I bet he's already rich enough to have a swimming pool.

I've done that, not as bad as you think. But I guess it depends where in Peterborough and for who (would avoid the Passport Office, once went to a union meeting with a lot of their staff and it was like walking into the prison out of 'Midnight Express'.)

Talking of Peterborough, has our friend Daragh told everyone how much they are making in terms of sell on? I suspect they are too far away from this deal to have a finger in this pie. He will be livid.

Pretty similar, actually. Importing Messi is the worst thing they can do as it makes the league some kind of Harlem globetrotters circus. They should introduce promotion and relegation but the owners are too scared to do that.

It's actually quite interesting that Brett Johnson is advocating for the USL to have promotion and relegation. I think there would definitely be a market for that kind of league in the US, it would differentiate it from the glorified cup competitions that all major American sports leagues are.

Yup and they desperately want to make the country more appealing as a tourism and entertainment destination.

i think the point is, that he has the opportunity to be mega-rich whilst playing at the highest level in a short career or to be mega-mega-rich whilst going to a far lower level.

don't understand why you'd chase the extra dollar at the expense of your ambition

Maybe he recognizes that he can't compete in terms of talent and ability, but he can compete in terms of career earnings.

I suppose he is not going to play for England again at a major tournament, and as a Liverpool fan his boat has sailed on that front.

Once you take away playing for your country and the club you support it is just a job, he has played prem for a while so at 29 you go where the money is.
