Alright anyone been to Rome? 18:13 - Sep 13 with 2167 views | Ftnfwest | Going a week on Monday for first time (at 58) with lady F. Any recommendations? Want to do Vatican one of the days but open to off the beaten track stuff otherwise.
Alright anyone been to Rome? on 18:24 - Sep 13 with 2117 views | DJR | You can wander anywhere in Rome and come across something astonishing. There are the usual places but one of my favourites (from more recent times) is the Monument to Victor Emmanuel, an enormous white granite building which dominates the area because it is on a slight hill. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&mediaurl=https%3a%2f%2fmedi I don't think I've ever seen a building with such a wow factor. Alright anyone been to Rome? on 18:29 - Sep 13 with 2074 views | dickie | Brace yourself for weight gain! (and embrace it!). Gelato, pizza, pasta, repeat until you balloon! I found the Vatican fascinating but distasteful - so much opulence and grandeur but so many people begging in the vicinity. I'm not particularly enamoured by religion at all though so that may have influenced me. The obvious tourist spots are definitely worth going to, and Rome is brilliant that almost all the main sights are walkable. At the Vatican I really enjoyed walking over the dome at St Peter's Basilica - brilliant views of the city, a somewhat terrify view to the floor of the inside of the basilica but beware it's very high, and somewhat cramped (my wife wasn't a fan). Avoid the food spots in the main piazzas, just off the beaten track we found plenty of wonderful family run restaurants that were cheaper and delicious (one in particular was memorable near Piazza Navona had the elderly matriarch of the family restaurant making fresh pasta middle of the restaurant while watching Roma play in the champions league. The food was amazing

For balance, it would be close to the top of mine. Not in mid-summer, but in spring and early autumn it will be perfect. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Alright anyone been to Rome? on 19:12 - Sep 13 with 1936 views | bazza | Colosseum is a must .. pantheon, Roman forum,Trevi fountain. if you like your Roman history, you will enjoy Rome, it’s just very busy, and you kind of get swept along with the crowds/tours.. but if you head off the beaten track, you’ll find nice places for food and drinks, and can watch the world go by. Just at the back of the building is an elevator that takes you to the roof for a small charge. Really good views on top.

Don't get a photo with a bloke dressed as a Roman or stand anywhere near any 'street art' displayed on the ground or you'll still be paying for it when you get home. There's a good craft beer scene, if not cheap. If you find an ABC Minors badge it will be the one I lost on a school trip in 1973.
Alright anyone been to Rome? on 19:59 - Sep 13 with 1810 views | bluefunk | Worth considering, A guided tour of the Colosseum and the Forum - you are literally walking through history, and a guide will explain why. Piazza Novonna - statues, fountains, people watching, then a short walk to the Pantheon, an historic building in so many ways. Visit the church on the north end of Piazza del Popelo, there a Caravaggio painting, The Conversion of St Paul, which is imply stunning, at the front of the church on the lest. Otherwise, the obvious Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc, and just walking around, but do some research before you go, so you get to see the th8ngs that interest you.

Vatican Museum/Sistine chapel incredibly crowded - like going to a football match. Enjoyed the Capitoline Museum more.

There were people saying the queue would be 3h for the colosseum (and to pay to go with them to beat the queue). Took us 15-20 mins to get in, NOT using their "service". See the sights, eat good food, drink some nice wine. Can't really go wrong.
