Kevin Ellis - Ipswich Town 16:58 - Sep 24 with 6659 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

I was listening to the Blue Monday podcast, and Joe mentioned Kevin Ellis was part of the Telegram group.

The name immediately rang a bell from squad photos etc from the time, and of him being a youth prospect. Probably also from Champ Manager squads too.

I looked him up, and it appears he made one appearance for us, 10 mins as a sub in a 4-1 defeat v Arsenal.

Does anyone know if this was the only professional appearance of his career? If so, it goes to show how precarious a football career can be. Did he suffer a career ending injury? After appearing in the Prem you would think you'd be almost guaranteed some form of career.

think he went on to kings llyn after us, so almost certainly his only pro appearance

Yep. Just the one game at Highbury in that hideous 94-95 season. He would have only been a second year YTS as well. Not really sure what stunted his progression as it was Burley who gave him that debut and we would've started at a lower level the next season. Don't even recall him getting in the Anglo-Italian squads.

I think he ended up at Lowestoft eventually.

Bizarrely I have his autograph.

He actually started that game at Arsenal, and played 81 minutes. It was the only time he ever made the matchday squad - he never even appeared as an unused sub on any other occasion. He certainly had injury problems but I can't recall the details.

Chris Kiwomya played for Arsenal in that match too.

Richard Wright, who is the same age as Ellis, also made his debut a few weeks later.

Was he carried off the pitch by fans on his debut?

Kev here..
A general lack of pace, an overall lack of ability and an ACL reconstruction all contributed to this thread being longer than my 1st team career ever was 😭🤣💙

I think almost everyone in this forum would consider playing for Ipswich at Highbury to be the greatest achievement in life pretty much.

Although has seemingly dropped this since we've been in the premier league?

Really enjoyed his analysis - especially the defence of Harry Clarke last season.

I wondered if you might pop up!

Thanks for answering the question.

Sorry it didn't work out.... but you still lived the dream!

You mustve been decent to make even a single Prem appearance?! Was there an injury crisis?

Humble username BTW!!

Few reasons really. Feels like there are a million people on social media and tv analysing our games now. Back in league 1 the itfc timeline was a smaller community and enjoyed sharing the goals as many wouldn’t see them especially in near real time.
Also my boy has started playing men’s football this year so I am watching him most Saturday afternoons at 3pm.

Still posting my opinion on the Blue Monday telegram group whether people want it or not 😂
Can highly recommend it, it’s like Twitter before all the African Premier League fan boys jumped on every post.. well if you can ignore Mullet

Haha I think I set this username about 15 years ago when I first used to read the forum on TWTD don’t think I have posted in a decade and couldn’t find where to change it haha.

Long story short, George came in as manager and was trying to transition to “his” team I was doing well in reserves but that particular weekend Gav Johnson & Thommo injured themselves in a tackle on the Friday so I got called up.

I have found myself questioning whether I enjoy following Town in the Prem (from afar as I'm not Ipswich based), I don't mind the lack of wins, its more the lack of access and the hysteria that surrounds the Prem that puts me off a bit.

Thommo.

One of my faves of that era. Will never forget that winner at Southend. He had a left foot and a half on him that bloke.

* Can't also not mention that last minute strike at Carra.

I've no idea if the stats would support it, but felt like we'd always got a chance of scoring from his corners.

Even more bizarrely he bought me a pizza when I was a kid.

Went with my dad to see one of his mates, who for some bizarre reason had Kevin Ellis and Lee Bracey round.

Ellis bought us all pizzas and seemed a really nice bloke, albeit I was 15/16 I guess and that's entirely based on him buying me a pizza!
