The O'Shea v Wolfy thing 10:29 - Sep 26 with 8084 viewsFrimleyBlue

I mentioned recently his aerial ability over Wolfys and the below has shown it is a very important aspect of his game and one of the biggest reasons he's in the side.

We allow a lot of crosses to come into our box, plus we do concede a fair amount of set pieces from corners to freekicks so I can see why KM does find that an important attribute.

2023/24 season, Wolfy according to footy stats was in the top 71% of winning aerial duals compared to O'Shea's 98%

O'Shea has played 2 matches, statistically you can't compare that to Woolfy's complete season. And where do Wolves come into it?

Surely Woolfie won't play against Wolves, he's one of their own.

And when I see him put in a better performance than what Woolfenden has managed this season I might start to accept the change a bit more. Whilst I can't disagree that a lot of data indicates O'Shea should be ahead of him in the pecking order it hasn't come about yet and, unlike Luongo, Chaplin and (albeit due to a Carabao Cup game) Burgess, Woolfenden hardly looked like he was struggling.

O'Shea will no doubt play on Sunday. For our sake, let's hope for a great performance.

Depends what you're open to seeing tbh

I've shared their figures for 2023/2024 which BTW O shea was in the prem for

and this season Wolfy's played 3 games to O shea's two and according to footy stats, wolfy's won 2 aerial duals to O'Shea's 8.

But it has come about as these stats show, he might not pass the ball how you want him to, but he's done exactly what he was brought in to do.

Who knows how those games could have gone without him winning those aerial battles.

Just think personally people are watching him with the wrong focus.

The two most successful clubs at integrating from the Championship to the PL and getting value in the transfer market have been Brentford/Brighton who are hugely stats driven. The former were keen on O'Shea too. Sometimes the eye doesn't tell the full story.

Ah you must have missed his long diags to wide positions then to get the ball up the pitch, or is it because he doesn't move up the pitch himself you have an issue with?

Granted though he had some positional issues, i'll give you that as to be expected when playing with new team mates. Greaves had similar issues in first couple of games, left Davis unfortunately with a lot to deal with

Brentford broke their transfer record last summer on a centre back, Nathan Collins. He was crap all season. For some positions data works, for others the eye test is better.

Maldini said if I have to make a tackle I’ve already made a mistake. So much good defending doesn’t result in a ‘duel’ or a tackle, and as such it’s one of the worst positions to use data on.

I love Greaves, he was playing next to O Shea and also pinged one into the stands, so just thought if youre gonna remember a ping then you shouldn't really forget one from someone else.

I thought O'Shea was really good at Brighton, but we didn't defend well on Saturday.

But ultimately, McKenna has deemed it necessary to spend £12m on him, and that's not to sit on the bench

You won't find a bigger Woolfenden fan than me, but it's fairly obvious he is going to be seen as the back up for O'Shea and only way we see a lot of him and he gets hold of the shirt is if O'Shea has to be dropped because of errors, or picks up a long term injury and Woolfie gets in and excels.

He looked up to it in his first 3 games in the PL, but McKenna obviously knows what he wants and that was an upgrade rather than let him see if he could cope at this level before looking to upgrade

EDIT - I said at start of summer for me the only nailed on starters for this season would be Leif Davis, Sam Morsy and Omari Hutchinson which looks the case. Axel has done very well, and Burns getting good game time but the rest of lthe previous 2 years heroes will be squad players.

We need to see Cam Burgess get some PL mminutes as he deserves them

Agree though, with the final paragraph, he didn't exactly take his claim at Wimbledon. Albeit that was obviously just one game.

I just find the expectation of O'shea walking in and showing that he's twice the player of wolfy immediately quite baffling.

Wolfy had a solid few games, its not a suprise, he had a pre season and pre season games with minutes alongside Greaves.

O'Shea joined back end of August, international break, minimal training and game time, comes in and playing with new teammates.

I don't really see what people were expecting, O Shea to wait until next season before he gets picked?

That's not what people are discussing.

I don't think it is wholly wrong to assert that O'Shea has been nothing more than OK since coming in, he has some better attributes than Woolfy but also vice versa.

O'Shea is going to play, for now, as we have invested heavily on him. However, I think it is also correct to assert that, Woolfy is not far behind or even on the same level as O'Shea (depending on your viewpoint).

What I see is that Woolfy played against Liverpool, Man City and Fulham, O'Shea had Brighton and Southampton. So not a straightforward comparison to make at this stage.
