So relegation/survival rivals? 11:34 - Oct 7 with 5617 viewsElderGrizzly

From the first set of games, it looks as though Wolves are hopeless and Southampton not much better.

Southampton have them in the next 4 games, plus a slowly improving but still poor Everton team and Leicester.

I can't see either of Wolves or Southampton improving significantly if the current managers stay. O'Neil is on a run of 1 win in 18 PL games, so he probably won't last much longer so that could turn their season, but then they also have issues with PSR.

We are going to need to finish above 3 of:

Wolves
Southampton
Everton
Leicester

I can't see many others being dragged into it based on how the season has started.
Palace are too good to stay down there for much longer.

Thoughts?

The Woolf vs O'Shea debate is interesting. I genuinely thought O'Shea coming in for the Brighton game was going to be a temporary measure and that LW would still be 'first choice' - maybe O'Shea was suited to dealing with the pace of Brighton, horses for courses etc.

I thought LW would have returned to play a couple of games again by now, and we'd be seeing a bit of rotation. It's not as simple as being upset about seeing previous regulars now out of the team, but there must be an argument for the centre back partnership starting from scratch being a potential factor in some of the goals we've conceded.

O'Shea was a £12m signing with 60 PL starts under his belt and 25 Ireland caps - he was always going to be the starter and it's just a case of having to bite the bullet from McKenna as to when he makes the change knowing it may be a step back for 2 steps forward

You're right, but the counter argument might suggest we look at what Luke Woolfenden is worth - maybe not £12m but it wouldn't be an insignificant figure*, and also the fact no one has had an issue with Greaves stepping straight in despite having no PL experience. There's also a few others in the same boat (albeit they might have come from elite academies).

*I reckon Woolfy would have a few Ireland caps if he qualified as well.

Palace and Everton will both be fine. Southampton are as good as gone unless they make a cracking appointment after Martin. Wolves will hopefully stay being crap.

Hopefully a Brentford or Forest will go on a bad run and be sucked back in but they look decent so far. We really could have done with Leicester getting that points deduction.

Southampton as good as gone?? They’re one 3-0 win behind us! and we’ve all only played 7 games.

If this website is to be trusted (even as a ball-park), then we’re punched well above our weight as it is! Goes to show what a decent young manager can do…

What a daft reason, 60 PL starts is meaningless.

Would you rather Omari, Burns or Ogbene on the RW?

I think you are taking a very negative view here. It's all very fine margins at the moment and probably will continue to be as the season progresses.

Everton are 1 point ahead of us, hardly starting to pull clear! Wolves have conceded 21 goals in 7 games and have Man City/Brighton in their next two. They aren't going anywhere fast.

I don't think it's negative, realistic, yes.

Although teams can go on very bad runs, the Forests and Bournemouths have had a very good start, Leicester seem to have re-found their feet. Everton survived comfortably last year with a deduction. Wolves may have a bad season but I think a change of manager will rectify that. Palace, have been here before, unless Eze injured I am sure they will be fine. I am just struggling to see who other thanuthampton we will finish above at this stage. However, as I posted a win over Everton would change that, another winless match and I fear the mentality and momentum of recent seasons will dwindle.

I'd say there is every chance that this is another season where we need a crazy high total to achieve what we'd like, I don't think 34 points will cut it.

If that's your opinion then fair enough but it's definitely a negative spin on things.

It's bonkers to me that we've picked up 4 points from 7 games and still aren't in the bottom 3! Shows you the standard.

We will finish 17th👍

Not just the standard - it’s how polarised this league is. The top 5/6 are a world away from the bottom 5/6.
