Named tomorrow as the new Tory leader if the polls are believed. Could she revive Tory fortunes before the next election or is it too early. Starmer doing his best to help Unfortunately.

The reasons for that are well known. Unfunded, uncosted and unrealistic. Implemented by an implausible PM in a haphazard manner. It’s now set the argument for a lower tax growth agenda back by a decade. Tories have a lot to answer for post Brexit.

low tax, small state budgets are always unrealistic if you want to build a better country

given that such a low percentage of the public voted for his party, and his wild swings of opinion towards, say, the rwanda policy, i think i'm very much in the majority

Ok, it’s an opinion I guess, but I disagree with you.

Or perhaps they don’t have the prejudices you perceive them to have in the first place? Sometimes it’s good to be open to other opinions and points of view.

Depends what you define as “better” I guess. I think the opposite is true, and that a bloated state and high taxation disincentivises growth. If there’s one thing the U.K. needs, it’s higher productivity and growth. Bloated public services stands in the way of this imho. The reason you have the view you do, is that the Tories since 2016 have been staggeringly incompetent.

Labour are in for two terms.

Wrong. They’ll be in for three, possibly four. The Tory swivel eyed mob will get through at least two or three leaders and it will take a generation change and really a new party that tries to represent more than one percent before anyone votes for them, regardless of what Starmer and the current mob do.

The Tories are toast.

I don’t believe it is a minority opinion. I think Cleverly would (and probably will) be a very effective leader for the Con party. I think Starmer would be a lot more concerned about Ckeverly than either Badenoch or Jenrick. At least there is now some clear water between the bloated, big state, high tax , low growth ideology of the current gov and the low tax, small state, pro growth ideas of Badenoch. I fear, however, that she will become bogged down in the culture war, immigration, anti-EU, anti-immigrant nonsense that just plays straight into Starmer’s hands. Hopefully I’m wrong tho, and all that was just for the Tory membership

You can start with the NHS. Public sector productivity is much, much lower than private sector productivity, and is falling further behind all the time.

Tory chaos is a result of an obsession with low tax for the rich.
What cuts to public services do you suggest ?

Now that Labour has left the centre ground open again by tacking so far left post election, there’s enormous centre/centre right space opened up for the Cons. I just fear they’re going to blow it by trying to appeal to the jingoistic Reform rubbish

Tax in the U.K. is not low. The previous Tory gov was not a low tax administration, just an inefficient and incompetent one. There’s a big difference.

The UK's tax burden is currently below the average of the 38 nations in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as well as the G7

The average earner in the UK now has the lowest effective personal tax rate since 1975 — and one that is lower than in America, France, Germany or any G7 country.

It’s unbelievably inefficient. It just needs a complete restructuring. Just chucking ever more money into the pit of the NHS is insane!!

It’s nudging 40pc of GDP. It’s madness. It’s the highest it’s ever been. Am I actually debating with someone who thinks we should pay more tax!? It’s a niche view you have, I guess. Not an opinion I encounter often!

It's daft to predict the next election already. A lot can happen in five years. If Labour's gamble works they will be able to splash the cash a bit in the last couple of years while upping the living wage each year.

Labour might go into the next election reasonably popular. It's impossible to predict right now.

Truly impaired.

That’s very true! Look at how popular Jonson and Tories were in 2019! Fortunes can change quickly. However, I think the lack of growth in the economy in the back of Labour policies will really drag public sentiment down. It feels much more 1970s dour than 1997 exciting, and I don’t see Starmer reversing that sentiment. He’s an uninspirational figure, to say the least. Polls very much supporting that view currently. Labours huge move to the left has left the centre ground wide open for Cons, if they are able to grab it. I don’t think anyone expected this current gov to be so hard left, although looking at the background of the main incumbents, it should come as no surprise

A tad disingenuous when you lot have ripped apart people like Rayner. Demonised everyone inside and outside of the party through identity politics etc.

Tories don’t vote for a typical woman or person of colour, they vote for a one who will go out of their way to act in a way that suits the party’s interest.

Pander to the rich, speak for “their” community despite not having experienced anything like the same life they have. Rishi was a billionaire after all. Thatcher destroyed every nuance of femininity to become the Iron Lady, it did far more harm than good for the rest of the world.

The fact that you have to put on an act to be a Tory leader is the crux of the matter, that even extends to Alexander and his Boris persona to enthral us plebs.

"You lot" lol wind your neck in fella. Just because somebody said something vaguely positive about the Tories they are suddenly stamped with the Tory tag.

It’s a positive based entirely on a false premise. If you’re going to stick yours out and look silly, don’t expect everyone else to be on the same level.

Pretending you’ve just “said something vaguely positive” when your posts today are slating one side and not the other is another flimsy excuse to get all teary about people noticing.

Care to tell us the average rein of a non white male Tory post Maggie? And how far back you have to go to find all of this wonderful diversity? Based entirely on merit of course.

if you can find one person who thinks cleverley is "very charismatic, very likeable" etc outside his direct family i'd be shocked let alone a "majority" of people!

the vast majority would be james who? followed by "which one is he again?"

if you take away the culture war, anti-immigration, anti-eu (all anti-growth policies by the way) from badenoch, you're not left with much at all, that's been her whole schtick!

Whatever you may think it is great to see a major political party have a woman of colour leading them. Its progressive and shows that barriers are breaking down.
