Seemed to just be turning into the usual mud-slinging and misrepresentation. Got too much to do to deal with the abuse reports, PMs and emails which these threads generate. Not really sure it should be my job to deal with all that on what's ostensibly a football forum.

Fao BDS & GB in case the thread gets locked or pulled - just wanted to say -

Have you two ever met in person? If not, can you get together over a pint at PR, the City Ground or wherever?

If you did, I think you might quickly realise that you have a lot more in common than you do in opposition - ie you're both just standing up for victims of terrorism on both sides, against malign groups on both sides (incl the Israeli govt). You both just want the killing to stop, as do we all. That should be enough to draw a line on here. You might even end up liking each other

I'd stand the first round :)

The Family Slave briefly met GB at Blackburn away last year, I think perhaps the confirmation that my vintage Belstaff jacket was indeed superior to his combined with my understated good looks was more than he could bear Ryorry. Envy is a terrible thing but if he could just let it go I'm sure we'd be fine.

Well said.
Apart from a couple of predictably loyal backing singers, I think the majority of contributors to these particular debates have come to a similar conclusion, based solely on the tiresomely familiar method and behaviour you have so accurately highlighted.

Arf. If we are talking about where other posters support comes from, your list of upvoters consists of somebody who believes that Keir Starmer and his government have been captured by the “Israel lobby”, another who brands Zionists (that’s 90% of worldwide Jewry) as “racists” and who regularly indulges in tropes about “Zionist power” on here, and another who has the symbol of the Baader–Meinhof terrorist gang as their avatar. These removed thread threads never end well, Phil.

The original arguments get remixed, they attract your usual suspects of sanctimony and board policing, telling you how you should run your website, and I assume give you more work to do.

You are easily the most dishonest poster here GB. You make this website so unpleasant at times I'd not miss it if just saying that gets me banned.

I can't think of a single day in the last week where you have not convinced yourself that someone is antisemitic and gone on dishonest rampages throwing around foul accusations.

I’ve met Banksy at Blackburn R. He’s a really nice bloke with a lovely family. Unfortunately he’s posted some awful stuff since then that I find difficult to reconcile. He may well feel the same.

FYI, I’ve had him on ignore for roughly six weeks and haven’t responded to any of his posts for a couple of months. Mostly for the benefit of other board users as there is no point to the endless rows.

If you look at my recent responses on this thread, I’ve only come in to counter personal attacks against me by the usual suspects. So I’ve replied to Chorley and then to Big Al. No attacks and I wouldn’t have bothered replying. I think people have the right to defend themselves when attacked. As I said in an earlier reply, I don’t think it’s fair on Phil, who is trying to enjoy a non work weekend, to have people jump on this thread string up the arguments that contributed to the deleted thread getting deleted.

I’m quite happy to get on with my Sunday, but if there is another pop at me when I look in later then I’ll respond.

There may be a small irony in this one 😉 (that you too have effectively offered advice on how he should run his own website, that he should consider no longer making posts of this ilk as a tool for curbing bad behaviour because you believe they serve little benefit), but I agree with you that the ones I've read follow the same pattern. I also agree with WKJ though, that they may serve a purpose in illuminating those posters who find it impossible to move on from previous arguments or grudges. I also agree with your fundamental point that it's not for us to be directing forum policy aha, although I think many posters have just tried to be helpful, like you have aimed to be this morning.

Why bother posting this 24/7? Just tell people to move their endless arguments over wars in the Middle East somewhere else. Cant believe some on here. Grown adults with nothing better to do than to argue over conflicts and politics with strangers on the internet they’ll probably never meet and, if they did meet, would probably get on quite well over their love of Ipswich Town.

You hypocrite. You say you are only replying to people who have had a pop at you, but this comment in your reply to Bigalhunter "another who has the symbol of the Baader–Meinhof terrorist gang as their avatar. What a sewer or be swimming in Al" is an unprovoked pop at me. I made no posts to the removed thread, nor to this current thread, in fact my last post was middle of October, so you sure know how to hold a grudge!

My avatar is for the Red Army Faction of which the Baader-Meinhof group were a subset. The RAF certainly had left wing politics and were also motivated by the failure of West Germany to denazify the government and leading industrial concerns. So naturally the nazis in the german government made sure the RAF were designated a terrorist group. The group's methods were certainly violent though. A gross over-simplification on my part I admit, but I am sure no-one wants a full-on discussion of western europe politics in the 70s, I certainly dont (see my signature, this took close on an hour to put together).

Shout out to any fours, A wing, Norwich

I have just read The Order of the Day by Éric Vuillard.

It is translated from the French and tells the story of some pivotal meetings and incidents which took place in the lead up to WW2.

Your comment about denazification brings to mind the part of the book which deals with a meeting with German industrialists, the following being from a review of the book.

"It is a short, episodic satire, bitter and vituperative, and castigates the crass, ruthless self-interest of the industrialists and financiers who lined up to back Hitler, to profit from the coming war, and especially from the slave labour that the Reich would deliver for German industry as the Final Solution cranked into gear.

It opens with a meeting that did actually take place on the 20th February 1933, between the president of the Reichstag, Göring, and Germany’s key industrial leaders. This opening scene is splendidly handled. The men are described in all their bespoke tailored bulk and physicality – and then Vuillard switches perspective to emphasise that these men, these “calculating machines at the gates of hell”, are in fact not important, they are of no personal significance. What is important are the “legal entities” they led – BASF, Bayer, Agfa, Opel, IG Farben, Siemens, Allianz, Telefunken, BMW and other corporations then at the heart of the German economy, as they are now."

Don't know what the original thread was about and was just about to read the removed thread thread and it just disappeared.
For good reason I'm sure.
Not posting this to stir anything up, but the opportunity to type removed thread thread removed was too much!

Erm my two thoughts after reading aaalll that:

1) Phil should just direct 'abuse reported' and feedback emails to a burner address and never look at them. Not only does his life become easier, but the thin skinned perma-offended will eventually give up and either learn to cope or leave the forum.

2) Uppie and downie arrows are a helpful shorthand for showing your agreement or disagreement with a post if you don't have the time or energy for a full response. They aren't an insult or a diss. They should stay, and people who get upset about them should just... get over it.

Perhaps consider setting a posting cap for users in contentious and emotionally charged areas, such as Middle East discussions. For example, limit users (or repeat offenders) to one or two posts per day or enforce a word limit per reply in these specific threads. This would encourage more thoughtful contributions and hopefully reduce the rapid escalation of heated exchanges. Implementing this sparingly, only in certain ‘hot-potato’ sections of the forum (rather than site-wide), ensures that freedom of expression is maintained in less contentious areas, while keeping more sensitive topics manageable for Phil.
