I'm guessing he's under instruction to do this but it can leave us massively exposed. Not only did he do it for United's goal where he was 10 yards inside their half near the touchline, he pursued United attackers in similar fashion on a couple of other occasions. This worries me somewhat. I know Leif plays high and the whole defensive line shifts across with Burgess more of the left cb in a three at times, so if he goes too far chasing into the opposition territory without success, it's inevitable that there is a massive gap down our left flank. Greaves was doing tge same thing at times but with more success due to his better pace and tackling tenacity. This is not me digging out Burgess, it's clearly an instruction but we will undoubtedly get caught out sooner or later. I'm not sure I see the benefits of a Centre Half in the Burgess mould effectively going walkabout 2 or 3 times each game. Opinions?

Burgess was late in pressing Fernandes, which opened up the space for Dialo to break on us. In his post-match press McKenna talked about them as a collective trying to figure out who was picking up who early on which was when the goal came. I think once they'd done that Burgess did his man for man job pretty well. Greaves possibly better suited to doing that but overall I think Burgess has stepped up really well and is doing things I suspect he'd never have thought he'd have been doing a few seasons ago!

Agreed, in the second half the rush pressing from Burgess on the edge of the Man Utd penalty box was eye-opening, his transformation from the player at Accrington is incredible.

Excellent analysis from Carragher. It still worries me though as Leif is so attack minded it has to work perfectly or we're very, very open down that flank.

And one positive aspect of his playing high up the pitch is that he has less work to do going all the way forward when we get a corner and a player of his stature is very useful in the box. He has been close a couple of times this season so let's hope that he gets the chance to break his Premier League duck on Saturday.

I loved it. It was aggressive and positive, trying to smother them before they could get out of their half.
We play risky football, it's nothing new and doubt we'll change!
What I love is that we are getting better as we get braver. I saw a lot in the first few games players taking the safe option as I imagine they always had in the back of their minds that if they lost possession or made a mistake at this higher level they would be punished (as we have seen is true), but I think this actually leads to more errors as it is completely contrary to our entire system, we need players to make brave choices for the team to work as a whole.
I noticed a moment in the 2nd half against United where we were struggling to get hold of the ball, and Hutchinson took control of the ball in our own 3rd moving towards our backline, and I think it was Tuanzebe on the right made a move to run forward and give the option for a little pass across to him to break out of the press, but he stopped, probably because he was conscious that if the ball didn't come to him then he is out of position and Man U would have had the ball in a really dangerous position. What happened in the end is Hutchinson played what would have been a perfect little pass for the run, but as Tuanzebe had stopped it went out of play and Man U were able to assert pressure again from the throw in. McKenna looked really frustrated by this because I think he can see there is still that little bit too much caution at times that probably wasn't there last year.

Leif got caught out a couple of times in the first two games and held back after that. Recently he's started to push forward again and we've looked much more like our old selves as a result.
It's risky and we'll probably lose a few goals to the better teams, but the benefits are huge - he didn't get the most assists for the last two seasons by staying in his own half did he!
Every aspect of McKenna's tactical plan is risk vs reward - it's why we've played out from the back since day one, and the silly goals we give away are worth it across the season. The same with Burgess in this instance - because he doesn't go, it leaves Fernandes to play that simple yet key pass, and boom, 1-0. The difference at PL level is that tiny mistake is magnified 10x. I don't think we can underestimate the improvement across our squad in these first few months of the season, just by being exposed to the level. And they've not shirked it, or shrank into themselves - they've kept playing exactly as McKenna's asked them to. Remarkable, really.
