The Double Pivot 22:49 - Dec 3 with 2019 views | portmanking | It just doesn't work against teams in a mid-block, does it? So disconnected between Delap and our midfield. Palace have basically shown the blueprint of how to stifle us now. We desperately needed to change shape tonight and create more space in the wide areas, but
The Double Pivot on 22:57 - Dec 3 with 1962 views | LankHenners | Don't think it's just Palace tonight - we've struggled already against teams that just suffocate the space and stop us getting on the ball in dangerous areas. Even when we were able to find some space we didn't use the ball well anyway. Needed to be braver and move the ball quicker but it was only really Cajuste that seemed up for doing that in a midfield area. Morsy had a bad game really - far too slow and negative and couldn't impose himself physically on his opposite numbers.

The Double Pivot on 23:01 - Dec 3 with 1924 views | pointofblue | We've struggled against certain teams for the same reason - Everton, Forest and Palace. West Ham was a defensive meltdown and Southampton was... odd. Perhaps we put too much pressure on ourselves. Other than Manchester City when they were decent, those were are worst performances of the season. There is a reoccuring theme we need to work out. Oddly, I am slightly more confident for Sunday, not necessarily the result but the performance. I think Bournemouth will suit our style more.

Morsy was very poor tonight indeed. I can't help getting more and more curious about how a Phillips and Cajuste partnership would look like. On paper, pedigree-wise it gives us more mobility and composure in possession. But is Morsy undroppable?

He shouldn't be. No player should be considering how quickly we moved on from some of the promotion winning squad - whether they're still here or not.

I think Morsy is indeed un-droppable. He's the heartbeat of the team, captain, I don't think I've ever seen him make a costly mistake i.e leading to a goal. The most 'doesn't hide' type of player I think I've ever seen in a town shirt. For him to not play I think it would have to be due a big big tactical change, which McKenna doesn't really do, or fear of fitness or suspension. I'm slightly (only slightly) puzzled by all the love Cajuste is getting at the moment. I like his style, he plays on the half turn and doesn't mind running with the ball a little, but does he do a huge amount beyond that? The idea that Phillips doesn't have a chance of getting the shirt back is a bit odd for me. When Phillips is on it he's got a bit more bite about him I think. I can see them each getting a similar number of minutes/games over the season.

If it weren't for cajuste tonight we'd still be playing the ball in our own half. That's why there is a question about morsy. Undoubtedly he keeps the ball and he wins it. And he's ugly with the little ankle tackles.. but sometimes his turning circle is in slow motion and he ends up going backwards as he can't get away from a marker. However. I still feel he needs to play. I really would like to see a third midfielder. What have we got to lose?

A 4-3-2-1 Christmas Tree formation would work well for us, IMO. I find we're losing the midfield game and either not having attack support or being caught out at the back. A midfield three of Cajuste, Morsy, and Phillips would allow us more control in the midfield, get Morsy to sit deeper as an anchor and Cajuste/Phillips to push further up. Taylor and Luongo available as subs, with consideration of recalling Humphries, if needed. Then have a combo of Sammie/Hutch/Chaplin with Delap up front. If width needed during the game, sub them out for our wingers (Broady, Clarke, Burns). If only it was as easy as FM.

Double pivot is two DMs that dictate the tempo/take the ball from the defenders and distribute the ball Mid block is to do with the opposition's line, so their strikers/attackers had more defensive/pressing duties and were deeper on the pitch

Great ta. So get our midfield pair pushing up a bit further and get the ball out wide more!

Just what I was thinking! Seems to me like a new name for an old an old way of playing. Haven't the CM’s always taken the ball from the defenders?

Morsy was immense. Won everything and protected the ball so well. Typical Sam for me.

Interesting how people see things so differently isn't it? I didn't feel like he helped join the dots at all well last night in midfield. Needed to be much braver in playing through the lines into Hutchinson. Omari was crying out for it at times. Just no point him being in the 10 role if our midfield aren't going to be brave and pick him out through a mid block.

Can't agree with that. A 6/10 performance maybe. He never shies away from anything, and puts in a proper captain's performance each week, but the gap in quality showed a bit last night.
