Delivery drivers. NOT a rant! 14:32 - Dec 7 with 2174 viewsFBI

Just had a delivery from a lovely chap in a white van, from a small business I’d placed an order with. Bearing in mind that my area is currently experiencing 70mph+ winds thanks to #stormdarragh I thought it was a good time to pay tribute to the people who make it possible for small, home-based businesses like mine to thrive. Self-employed owner-drivers and post office workers who go out regardless to make sure our packages get delivered on time. It’s easy to criticise -there are plenty of reasons to do so and we’ve all done it. But would YOU fancy their job?

Incidentally, I'm aware there are other people in other jobs, so don't.

It's definitely a crap job, the multi drop drivers are expected to drop loads of parcels every day and are under ridiculous pressures to deliver

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

I would love to be a postie but would be too much of a salary downgrade to do so

There are other people in other jobs, you know.

I was sparing a thought earlier for the council workers and contractors who are clearing the fallen trees. We’ve had loads down round here and they’re being cleared within a couple of hours of coming down. I wouldn’t fancy working next to stands of trees which you know can fall at any time.

We went to buy a load of stuff from our local deli earlier. Didn’t really need to (although we had a nice lunch!), but so few people were out.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

I did deliveries for a company 2 years ago. Would do anything from 1 to 6 deliveries a day depending on where I had to go. The owner of the company was a tight git and wanted me to go from Sudbury to Oxford, then down to Poole, then down to Newquay before doing a final drop in Bristol and stopping there overnight. I did it once....never again. I left after that.

It's the village Christmas Fair today. Because of the weather, they cancelled the helter-skelter, ruining practically everybody's Christmas. What is the point of the festive season with a helter-skelter?

I blame Welby and Wallace.

Are you factoring into your pay calculations all those fivers in Christmas and birthday cards?

It’s a sign of the decay u der Starmer imo.

They shut our ‘Winter Wonderland’ (generic funfair) too. Which was missing a trick in this weather, as people would be queuing around the block for a go on the big wheel. At about 300 rpm.

Going off at a bit of a tangent....

HM Government is currently stressing about how to get the economically inactive to go back to work, making work a bit less sh1t would help. Putting people under pressure, in the way that delivery drivers and others are, certainly does not help.

Yes I would fancy their job if physically fit. Out and about, fair bit of autonomy, not stuck indoors on a production line doing the same mind numbing thing over and over again. Also making a lot of people happy by delivering to the correct address and following recipients’ instructions.

No agreed, I'm sure it isn't just a British thing but it feels like we are trying to squeeze every last morsel out of employees with very little growth in wages generally

That's why there are two pubs, a chippy and a Chinese takeaway.

The mandatory requirements for a Civil Parish, just like the cathedral and airport for a city.

Most delivery guys and gals are fairly decent my way. Yeah you got the odd nobber but they are probably under so much time pressure, I get it.

And my postie is a legend, great dude, always positive, always in shorts and he does us the occasional favour as my in laws are a couple of streets down so if I'm out they will take it round there for us. Working for RM is a very rubbish time right now with staff constraints and bs they are put under too so for him to always be a happy chappy is great.

Indeed. I frequently fly from St Albans Airport - although it's at Luton as we want it no nearer.
