Late night shopping 22:11 - Dec 12 with 1763 viewsFrimleyBlue

Bit random I know.

But just seen on socials a rather depressing empty street in Chichester on what should be a late night shopping evening. I just wondered. What is it like in the town centre nowadays? I remember as a teen esp in December every Thursday was always late night shopping. Lots of shops open. Market stools. Music etc. Does that still happen?

a niche perspective

I had a little walk around, it didn't feel very late night shoppy

I assume it's still a thing but Flannels certainly wasn't open and you'd imagine that would be right up their street

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Probably washed their hands of it.

Late night shopping died years ago when retailers got there online presence sorted.

Shame, as it used to be part of the magic, but the only time I go into Ipswich now is when I'm walking through it to PR.

Is it even still on, genuine question?

Not even to grab a top up for the vape, some American candy and a Turkish shave at the barbers,? Or Maybe a quick bet in the bookies and a mocha.

I remember when my girls were younger taking them to Ipswich on a Thursday night. There was an array of Christmasy things, food stalls, singers and the Town was lit up. I think once Debenhams disappeared the Town died. I went into Town a week ago during the day, it's hard to spend more than a couple of hours there and that includes getting to and from the Buttermarket car park. I don't necessarily think going to the shops is dead as it's far more sociable than going online. But a lot needs to happen to bring the high street back like cutting costs to shops, cheaper car parking or even park and ride. But it needs people who are prepared to make these things happen and I'm not sure they are around.

it was deader than a dodo last night in Ipswich, I couldnt believe it as I do remember the days when it was so busy for Thursday late night shopping you couldnt even get in the shops or walk along Buttermarket or Tavern street, fair enough that was 35 years ago, but still my mum worked in retail in town and always said Thursday late night shopping time was their busiest period.

and for sure you can say online shopping etc, but online shopping goes tilt this time of year with so many orders and deliveries to make, even stuff you order today probably isnt guaranteed to arrive before Christmas, unless you pay extra for postage, which defeats the whole point of the online discount shopping imo.

so we are two weeks before Christmas, and yet there was nothing, not even the christmas paper sellers who just randomly appear and disappear this time of year.

And there were shops open, its still a thing, not that Ipswich Central expend any effort promoting it as a thing, but there were no shoppers that I saw at least. Ive seen it busier in town on a saturday at 6pm, when the shops are shutting than it was 6pm last night.

pubs were reasonably busy in spots, so there were people out for sure, but not out shopping.
