Goalkeeper, right back, striker…. Anyone else?

A new no.10?

RIP Sir Bobby

New striker top of the list, Al-Hamadi out on loan.

Right wing/midfield, Ogbene de-registered.

Doubt we'll go in for another right back with Tuanzebe coming back and Johnson and Clarke on the books. Unless we're shipping Clarke out, which seems unlikely.

Very much doubt we'll get another keeper in.

Another midfielder coming in and Luongo being moved on is a possibility.

You’re happy with our keeper options?!

Midfielders is the one area we are strong in I’d say!

Phillips, Morsy, cajuste and Taylor for 2 places.

You've not seen our past few games I take it.

Midfield is getting overrun / bypassed. Goalkeeper is the least of our concerns

Who is the weak link then? Morsy or cajuste, or both?

Entirely dependent on who we can get I reckon. Not sure we will be ruling anything out as we need to improve all over the pitch. I'd guess at 4 new faces. Striker, right winger, 10 option + another.

I didn't say I was happy with them, I was predicting what the club will do in the window.

I think there's little chance we bring in a new keeper, and if we do (by shipping out Walton, say) I very much doubt we'll be spending more than we did on Muric.

I am aware we're strong in midfield, which is exactly why the club may be tempted to move on a 30+ player who is unlikely to feature much and integrate a new signing without any immediate pressure. Again, I'm just guessing, I'm not saying that's what we should do.

We seem to have a lack of reliability there. Cajuste still can't last 90 minutes it seems. Phillips, not quite sure what is going on. We all love Sam Morsy but it's pretty damning that he is still the midfield mainstay and someone we rely on so much.

I'm looking forward to February, that way we can have a different daily thread about the players we need . . .

Priority is a centre forward to support/cover Delap and Hurst - the issue is less the goals conceded, but lack of goals scored in key games. Apart from the City, West Ham and Newcastle games, we have been in most matches, with our strongest and settled defence, some extra goals would have turned single goal defeats into draws and draws into wins.

I believe this is down to stability across the back - it is no coincidence that some of the more solid displays notably through September were with the same defence:

Muric, Tuanzebe, O'Shea, Greaves and Davis. Earned us our only clean sheet of the season and away draws at Brighton, Southampton plus what I consider our best display, the 2-2 at home to Villa.

I guess it depends how long until Tuanzebe and Greaves can play the full 90 minutes . . .

Alas I’m not a scout.

I’d simply give Walton a go, or sign Hladky back?!

There are some decent championship keepers though, one of them surely worth a shot.

Goalkeeper is not a priority - I still think Muric has saved us more times than he has cost us and has suffered from a lack of a settled defence in front of him. Our entire team has been making mistakes - worth noting that Muric has often dug out his team mates through 1-1 saves after the defence or the midfield has given the ball away, but it's good to have a scapegoat to blame.

Muric makes mistakes, but overall the amount of goalkeeper errors leading to mistakes in the PL is higher than ever, I think this is down to the new way that teams are playing out from the back.

Muric has been unlucky as his mistakes have been punished more than others. For example watching the Southampton games McCarthy, Lumley and Ramsdale have made plenty of mistakes without being punished as often, and with the Spurs / Liverpool game Forster could easily have given 3 away through poor passes and errors, after his horror show on Thursday night.

The better we can hold the ball up front and in midfield, both the more chances to create goals and the less pressure on our defence as we hold the ball up. Right sided midfielder and centre forward are the priority, with Al Hamadi going on loan and Ogbene being unregistered for remainder of season.

Indeed. Emi Martinez, one of the best keepers in the world, dropped an absolute clanger against Leipzig a couple of weeks ago, similar to Muric's Brentford mistake. It happens.

A striker seems inevitable and I hope we get that one done early, we have had enough time to be mulling that one over

The other positions seem a bit more of a mystery, I don't think we have really nailed down any attacking position behind the frontman frankly

The right back area looks a problem without Tuanzebe and I still think the short term answer for that against the better sides is a 541, 5311 or even a 361 (what ever variation makes us harder to beat)

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Our midfield is not getting overrun, but by-passed down either flank. That is not an issue of personnel, so much as system. We sacrifice defensive width for the strength up front which gets us goals.

Davis is up the pitch and Harry Clarke has to cover such a large area there's always space behind him to put a long pass for the opponent's left-sided forward to run on to. However, if the full-backs were nailed down in their corners, we don't have the spare players to push an opponent back and create scoring chances.

It's the inevitable compromise of a team not in a position to stuff their squad with the most skilled, athletic and often physically imposing specimens on the planet. Either go SuperMcCarthy defensive, or to attack your way out of the problem. We've chosen the latter.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

The problem with that is we aren't scoring enough goals or creating enough big chances.

Everything is difficult in January - nobody wants to let their best/better players go and there's not the same moving players out to get some in routine's that you see in the summer.

Also, why anybody thinks signing a new goalkeeper will be the end of all our problems is beyond me.

We will try for a striker 100%, a right sided player and maybe something completely leftfield.

But it will be hard and it will no doubt give some plenty to moan about, when it hasn't happened by the 5th January......

That's just a function of rapidly zooming up the divisions. Our attacking flair has come up against some of the best defences in the world.

We could have changed strategy in the Summer, but that would have required even more changes to the squad - and possibly also the manager. Would not have been so fun to watch when things going well. Not would it guarantee success any more than what we're doing now.

We might have got one or two better attacking players, Broja or the Greek chap, but they either weren't fit or didn't want to come. I think we'd be scoring more goals if not hampered by injury, but clubs cannot legislate for that, given squad size limits.

Striker, give Walton a chance in goal, right winger (but happy with Hutchinson in this position) and I still think we lack a quality midfield playmaker.

Agree. Would like to see a new central 10 so hutch can go back right.

If Axel is back soon the right back fine.

In the last two seasons, we have been able to bring on subs that have improved our goal threat but this season our subs make us less effective so we need to sign a few players in midfield and up front who can make a real difference.

Defensively we are poor without Axel and Davis is not great at defending so maybe we should try playing Davis further up the pitch and getting a more defensive LB.

Can’t see us getting another keeper but I don’t think Muric is good enough and someone like Kaminski could be better.
