No our team on paper is the worst in this league by quite a way. Almost team has looked better than us, even Southampton should have beaten us.

Injuries have fk’d us big time. For us to have any chance we’d have needed everyone to stay fit. That hasn’t happened; Hirst made of glass, sadly. Phillips can never stay fit. Axel gone for who knows how long. Three big pieces right there.

Came on here about to say we've been unlucky, list the games we should have got more points from but ultimately I think this is right.

It's a shame but a consequence of our rapid rise. Feels like we have to endure this season, not be too embarrassed and hope we can be more like Burnley than Luton next season. Replacing mckenna will be massive as I feel he'll not be around for another season int he championship

Does feel like the prem is becoming a closed shop. The 3 that came up look like they are going straight back down again. Having that happen 2 seasons in a row just puts the other 17 teams in such a strong position with the repeated transfer windows with many millions to spend.

Add Ogbene to this sorry list. Still believe our luck has to change and the fine margins tilt into our favour.

I was thinking that a few weeks ago but feels like it’s slipping away week by week. Will need an absolute belter of a January window to give us any chance

Good question re KM. I've always assumed the same.

But.... if we go down without a fight, is any team going to pay him the £5-6m that we do?

Good point, forgot about the contract improvement over the summer. But i imagine he'd be ambitious enough to take a pay cut to move upwards in his career.

Need to treble that points total at least to stay up. Probably 38 + points needed

I think it was Harry Redknapp (it's poss I have Harry confused with another person) who a couple of
seasons ago given the size of the recent new Sky contract predicted promotion/ relegation would basically kill itself. In that the same 3 teams promoted would be relegated the next season, and that would continue. He also predicted after a few season of that it would the give PL teams the excuse to reduce the promotion/ relegation to 2 teams then 1 team and then even eventually no relegation / promotion.

We “could” be 8-10 point better off without doing much different, and everyone would be saying we’ve had a solid start to life back in the Prem.

But we said the same in 2001-02… we could (can) point to a number of games where we should have got more points than we did and stayed up relatively comfortably.

My nagging doubt is that there’s only so many times you can be unlucky, and there comes a point where actually we’re not quite good enough.

All that said, given the journey we’ve had in the last couple of years coupled with the PSR restraints meaning we have by far the smallest budget, staying up was always going to be an even bigger achievement than the double promotion was in the first place.

Some people say talk of a “free hit” is defeatist, but if ever there’s a season that’s a free hit, this is it. If we go down, we go down, but we’ll have a season’s worth of Prem money to invest in strengthening the club / staff / facilities / squad.

There are numerous clubs who have taken several seasons and promotions / relegations to establish themselves in the Prem, it’s not an instant, one-off achievement.

That would be such a shame. I watched quite a lot of baseball a few years ago, but the leagues have no relegation. So around 1/3 of the way through the season half the teams have nothing to play for. And that's in a 162 game season! That plus the franchising of teams, moving around cities etc and it's soulless. Hope football doesn't slide that far.

Every club has injuries I don't think we have recruited as well as we thought in September hopefully a good January.

Man City have coped with injuries far better than us but I suppose having an established squad at the top of the division for many seasons will do that, won't it?

For the players we have, and the money spent, compared to Luton, I think yes.

I don't think Luton spent much in terms of transfer fees.

However, without sounding defeatist, We've got players to bounce back if we go down. Luton on the other hand............

We probably won't have delap, Hutchinson, Muric, O'Shea , burgess might go as well if we go down.

I think we've been really unlucky with injuries and marginal things on the pitch. We were always going to be in the relegation mix, but in more optimum conditions we'd have a few more points than we currently do.

Should have beat Fulham, Villa, Leicester, Brentford, Man U, Bournemouth IMO but even half of that we are still in a decent position points wise. We are already in the territory now of having to get points in the most unlikely places starting with our next two games.
