And it’s still the case that as soon as I see the words New Years Day I’m transported back to getting soaked leaving Vale Park at 4-0 down only to hear in the car as we pulled into a petrol station that it ended up 5-0.
Funny how stuff like that from your childhood cuts through all the great NYD’s since! Etched into my mind in the same way that 21 December is for that 2-0 win at Norwich on Sky.
We went into it on a long unbeaten run and sure some of the former players have since admitted they’d got hammered on NYE and were in no fit state to play.
What a miserable start to the year that was. Absolutely p!ssed it down IIRC. Was seated in the stand with Vale fans stood in the Paddock in front goading us every time another goal went in .
I remember being at Southend Utd on New Year’s day in 1992 with family watching Southend beat Newcastle 4-0, which put Southend top of the old Div 2. Obviously we went on to win the Div 2 that season, when I was back at Roots Hall in early April to see a Neil Thompson right (yes right) foot screamer get us a 2-1 win after Warky had missed a penalty and Phil Whelan had scored his 2nd in 2 games. 91-92 will always be one of my favourite seasons.
A 16 year old me was being plied with spirits in my coke by less responsible family members at the Westgate ward on NYE so I was as hungover as some of the players.
That was a long, arduous day and the performance on the field did not help.
But it's a memory I still hold dear. All worth it a few days later when we silenced Leeds in the Cup.

One of my fave ever away trips. Thommo's winner was a thing of beauty.
Point of order though, it was Whelan's first goal. He got his second v Wolves a few days later. 2 in 2 then never scored again I believe.

A treat for you. Grainy highlights of Ipswich v Blackburn 28 Dec 1991.
Blackburn were well fancied thanks to Jack Walker’s money. Didn’t end well for them that day. I was at the game and what an ending to it. One of many memorable games that season. I think we knew we had a good team by then and we’re playing some tasty football too.

Come back with me in time to 1962/63, my firsrt season supporting Town. We were League Division 1 Champions the previous season, but struggling in 62/63. Now here is a thing, after 19 games our record was W3 D6 L10 - just like now. After a freezing January and February, when there was hardly any football, the season was extended and we picked up enough points in April and May to finish 17th out of 22. Happy New Year.

I always think of that game being the turning point of that season. Prior to that, we'd had something like an eight match run of no wins including successive home defeats with an away win at Wolves breaking up another disappointing run.
Post Liverpool, we had a McKenna-esque run of victories and back then, leagues were a lot tighter so were able to win the division on 84 points. Much less stressful than last years slog!
Not to mention half the team playing with an actual hangover apparently.
And then a huge snarl up on the M6 through Birmingham only enlivened by suddenly realising the team coach was directly behind ours in the queue.
A few days later, up to Elland Road in the Cup to beat a Leeds team running away with the league.
Before an absolutely shocking performance in the next round at Barnsley in a blizzard on an open terrace (in the days when away fans were kept inside the ground for 15 mins at the end of the game)
Slightly happier Port Vale memories for me fortunately - the first time I'd seen us score 5+ goals in a game was NYE 1996 when we battered Port Vale at home. I was fairly young and given the frequency of the goals, that is the game where I felt like I first noticed the dancing stick men on the scoreboard when we scored (plus of course the iconic James Brown celebration music over the tannoy)

I seem to remember the floodlights being turned off before we left - leading to cries of "Er, we're still here you know"
Our performance was clearly not helped by players climbing up drainpipes to get back into the hot at 4am 😂😂. Can’t imagine the uproar if that happened today

It was strange really. I went to a game early in the season v Southend. It wasn’t great but we won 1-0. I just had a feeling that we were a lot stronger than the previous season. Looking at the fixtures, yes we went eight without a win, won at Wolves and thrashed Tranmere, then lost at Plymouth, drew at Swindon. And as you point out went on that run.
A few days before Blackburn, we beat Charlton comfortably on Boxing Day, but the B’burn match was the big one. Late goal to win it? Flippin’ brilliant and when that winner went in we thought yes, we are well in this.
There were some miserable moments, but many good ones. By and large that was an entertaining team that had a bit of everything. It’s interesting how the crowds picked up as the season progressed. It took a while for people to believe after the decline and turgid Duncan years.

You're right. Charlton was before. I had them the wrong way round in my brain. Just been refreshing my memory with the results. We had a crazy amount of 2-1 wins that season.

Later on that same day you watched Southend thrash Newcastle, we also played Port Vale away (again). A happier day than the OP's experience (which fortunately I missed through work, but my father and late uncle endured) because we won. I can't remember the score, but Kiwomya scored first. I think we had quite a successful Xmas period that season - was it 3 wins out of 3, including a 5-2 at home to Portsmouth?
Dad's ire with the 5-0 thrashing did abate a little after John Wark apologised to him many years later, as he promised to do to anyone who had the misfortune to witness that particular embarrassment!

Portsmouth was February. Week before the Liverpool tie.
I think we'd only just beaten Bournemouth in the 4th round a few days previous and at that point, we'd sold out for the tie which at that point, wasn't even 100% confirmed it was Liverpool we were playing. I can remember my ticket saying 'Ipswich Town v Bristol Rovers/Liverpool'.

Portsmouth was indeed February around the Liverpool games. I remember the Portsmouth match being particularly entertaining and we were better than the 5-2 score.
Open terrace, pi55ing down, cr@p performance, not uncommon for those of us regular away fans in those days. Turn up and pay on the day, except for the "glamour" games like up the A140 that attracted the part timers. Weren't 3000 of us away in those days, 300 more likely.
I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Our only home win in a year.

Yep. Used to be anything from 300-650 for games in the South West/North East/North West.
500-800 West Mids 700-1000 East Mids 800-1200 London, Oxford, Watford, Brighton etc
