We all make fun of Fosters... but we love it really 10:36 - Jan 13 with 3743 viewswkj

I was thinking about Fosters the other day, and also Carling Black Label. It feels like one of these tings we all make fun of in public, yet in private - we have a fond memory of the stuff.
Whilst taking 30 fosters on a camping trip, getting blind drunk and scaring the wife and kids might be somewhat whimsical, I am thinking about those times when we had just turned 18. Walk into Sainsburys, driving license at our hip, pick up a bumper case of the amber nectar, pay, walk out feeling like Berty big boIIocks.

So, with that in mind... do you have a dirty secret of a fond memories of the amber nectar (or Carling BL) you need to get out? Let's come together and celebrate the most "tastes like piss water" themed memories together.

You can't take the p1ss out of Fosters...you won't have any left.

I remember my student days, it used to be £1 for a bottle of Fosters on a Wednesday night. Play football in the afternoon, straight out afterwards to chat up the netball and hockey girls. TWTD.

As a teen it was my go to lager. I had a can of it a couple of months back however and it was vile, really sweet. I must confess that I do like Carling. I'm not proud of it, but I cannot lie.

If I show up to a BBQ in the sweltering heat and CBL is in a dusty igloo container with ice and water... I ain't going to think twice about it. Something about CBL and a barbie that still hits right.

Fosters was almost a luxury product compared to few bottles of white lightning or Ice Dragon..

Fosters was the go to back in the day…. Anyone remember when they brought out Fosters Ice in a bottle? I got a promotional t-shirt from Hollywoods one Thursday night…

Carling has always been awful.

Used to be on special offer in The Heathlands for about £2 per pint.

I drank it but never really liked it that much. Then I later discovered ale and realised it was just lager in general that I didn't really like.

Truly impaired.

Each to their own. I’ve always liked Fosters. Carling too. No problem enjoying a few of either or both. In fact most lagers are just fine. Coors, Stella, Estrella, Cobra (with a curry), any of it. They are what they are. A good session drink, particularly in summer. Not draught Budweiser though. That’ll give you the headache from hell if you have too many.

In winter I tend to go over to bitter - IPA, anything really. White beer is nice - I often have that abroad.

Dislikes: Real ale. That hop-esque, strained though tramps trousers tasting stuff really doesn’t do it for me. I’ll try them, because a particular chum is well into them, but I love to irritate the hell out of him by ordering up a Greene King IPA or a Fosters.

Ultimate guilty secret? Bought a bottle of Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry before Christmas and am enjoying it!

Never liked Carling,as a 15/16 y/o though i had some fun times drinking fosters.
Our local British shop will try and stock certain beers/ ciders if you ask them to, they've got me some Aspalls Premier cru before.
A couple of weeks ago I spotted some Fosters, in there, €3 a can! I laughed out loud!!

Advocaat still exists - Dutch isn’t it? My grandmother loved it. One Christmas my dad substituted it with lemon curd for a laugh (it was that kind of house). She never noticed the difference. Don’t think I ever tried it.

Mrs C and my mum liked a Snowball. None of it is really my thing. Looked up Babycham. It still exists. I tried it many years ago and it was ok. It’s a form of pear cider, which I do like and prefer to apple cider.

Cider: drink of the devil. Went with chums to Taunton years ago to watch kent/Somerset and have a laugh. Went into a pub and whistled up 4 pints of ‘finest scrumpy’. It came with bits and toenails in it. Tasted ok. Not too strong so we ordered more and so on. After five pints of it I don’t remember the rest. I was obliterated and my friends didn’t fare too well either. Happy days.

As a general rule mass produced and mass marketed beer is pigswill.
The funny thing about Fosters in that it is produced in the UK and I don't even know if Australians drink it.

I used to have a pallet of it under my bed at uni. I never particularly liked it, but it was cheap.

To my knowledge, the aussies mostly hate it, apart from a little corner of that country where it's local (no idea where it's supposed to be from).

I however love it and have many cans in the outhouse ready for necking. Shame on the lieabs, backbiters and vampires, as Lee Scratch might say.

I remember alot of the female members of the family drinking Babycham when I was a kid. Was obviously very classy..
Though think I last seen it in the 80,s.

Didn't realise it was pair cider, would definitely be preferable to apple cider.

Though actually I made apple cider couple of years ago and was quite pleasant compared to stuff you buy in shops. Was sorta like drinking alcoholic apple juice.

Thought advocat was an ingredient in a snowball?

Not unlike your sort to love stuff you're either not supposed to, or is frowned upon by most tho, is it?

We blew up the gasman with cider.

Having little money, we decided home brew was the way forward. Cider seemed the safest and easiest, not least because harpic was preferable to most home brew I’d ever tasted.

So we bought the kit and the dirty great white bucket for it to go in. Followed the instructions and although it seemed to have a bit of a green hue, thought what the hell and bottled it. Loads of them. Wedged under the stairs and left to do whatever this stuff does.

Well, the man came to read the gas meter. It was a rented place. He delved into the cupboard and bang! The whole lot went. The bloke emerged soaked in this evil stuff. Not one bottle had survived. The mess! He wasn’t happy - seemed a bit shaken.

He didn’t bother reading the meter that day. And we gave up on the dopey idea of home brew.

Probably for the best, sounds a tad dangerous.

Actually when I said I made some cider, it woulda been more accurate to say I collected alot of the apples (and a few pears) and help crush them into a liquid. That was the last of my involvement in the project until the drinking stage.
I do remember it having a rather unpleasant looking froth on the top of it that really needed to be removed prior to attempting to drink it.

All the same to me. Germany, Denmark, Spain, anywhere all much the same.

Done Belgian beer tasting in the U.K. and Belgium - just about every one you can dream of from Fosters style light to stuff in a balloon glass that looks and tastes like it’s come out of the sump of an old Ford Anglia. Some good, some truly dreadful.

Worse by a mile than U.K. offerings is a lot of American stuff. Particularly the liquid you get from those oh so stainless steel micro breweries. When you are reduced to thinking Sierra Nevada beer isn’t bad, you know you are in trouble so back to skull crushing Budweiser.
